Unsolicited critique: Looks great, perfect chop (especially for a 5 window), but those hood side louvers ruin it. They clash way to much with the bars of the grill. IMHO.

it's the cole foster '36, not "the metallica coupe" OK?

BTW, Cole is playing Rockstar this week with the biker beatoff, doubt we will see him chime in.

That there is where you are wrong....they flow beautifully with the fender, not to mention when it is painted the will be less apparent, and be a subtly and elegant change from stock....and will leave most people staring at it wondering why it looks good....subtle changes are the best thing for a custom....the changes should flow with the car and not take away from the original design..
thats where most people screw up...this 36 nailed the subtle custom theory!
Way to go Cole!!!

I hafta agree with K&R-- sorta--
The concept is awesome, but the angles of the louvers (and the leading edge of the hood sides, for that matter) are just a little off in my book. I like the shape of the louver pattern, as it does flow with the fender real well. But it's the angle of the louvers that bugs me. In my mind's eye, it would flow better if the first louver (and leading edge of the hood side) was parallel with the grill bars, and the last one parallel with the leading edge of the door.
That said, tho, the proportions on that car look dead-on from every picture I have seen, and the craftsmanship looks beyond human abilities... but then that's what we expect from Mr. Foster! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

When I first saw them I didn't like the louvers either but now that the car is all together, the work really well.
I think you guys a focusing too much on them. Blink a couple of times and look at the whole car. They look good from that perspective. They transition nicely from the same angle as the grill bars to the layed back angle.

Perhaps I'm not "wrong," we just dissagree.
My point is that there is so much vertical....the door lines, the edges of the hood sides, the grill bars...the radical backward slope of those last louvers isn't very subtle to me at all. But to each his own, it aint my car! (I wish it were.)

Love the car---don't care for the hokey louvers either. They interrupt the flowing lines for me. I'd think a nice horizontal spear/louver similar to 36 chevy hood side would be much more appropriate but what do I know?

purrrrfect 5 window into 3 window..I like the hood sides. I like the whole car... I need it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
I really like the crown on the rear of the roof... well, the whole roof. It doesn't have any of that flatness that 5w's seem to have at the rear window... i'm betting there was some serious surgery on that top all over. Outstanding car.

it needs those louvers ( Salina Boys website (http://www.salinasboys.com/pk_metallica_36ford.html) )
those pics at top cast a shadow louvers so they are alot more noticable
http://www.good-guys.com/news/images/thirty666_1.jpg
It looks alot better with out the shadow on the louvers http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif they do angle abit too much at the rear but it ain't my car so it doesn't matter. That is also one of best looking chop tops
good-guys (http://www.good-guys.com/news/news.asp?NewsID=241) ( I always provide a link to peoples website if I post using their pic)
Cole you are a legend, that is one of the sweetest rides ever http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
that car is soo frickin sweet. cole sure is one hell of a builder. i like the louvers. great car all around.

I, for one, like the louvers. . . they hint slightly that it is a modern custom and freshen it up . . . dangerous teritory, but they are executed well enough to pull it off.
but I really fucking love that there is a web site where guys will comment on minor proportional adjustments and back it up with clear descriptions of what they think would make it better. Ultimately it is subjective but it is way more interesting to hear WHY everyone thinks it looks good than to just all be in silent agreement.
It is a great compliment that you guys "read" his work with even 10% of the care that he "wrote" it with. I wish everyone paid attention to the details that much.

So Saturday I go to the G.G. show in Pleasanton for a bit...
for two reasons, one to buy some tools, and two to see this
car in person, Finally...!!!
The car is fucking amazing..!!! pictures do NOT do it justice..!!
and the inside looks about as clean as the outside..!! So crazy...
So I'm chatting with Cole for a moment, and this dildo rolls up
and introduces him self as some big-wig yahoo from KSJO radio....
After literally stepping directly in front of me,
he says: So, is this Kirk Hammet of Metallica's car..?
Cole says: yes it is...
dude: Is it Cole Foster who's building it..?
Cole: Yeah, I'm Cole...
dude: So, it looks as though it's in it's infancy stage huh..?
HAHAHAHAHA..!!! at this point, I seriously had to turn away
just to hold back my laughter.....
I just couldn't believe this schmuck...!!!
I mean seriously, why go up and talk to the builder about
a car that you have ZERO prior knowledge about..??
(except that it is being built for Kirk Hammet of Metallica...)
'infancy stage'..??! Why, cuz it has NO PAINT..?? HAHAHAHA
like that's all that had been done to it..??!!?
Yep, found it in a field, stripped the paint off,
and now we're really gonna go at it...!!
Open your eyes dude..!!! It was about the most insane thing
I think I've ever heard at a car show.... WTF..??
Anyway, after the dude left, I told Cole I felt bad for him
because he had to deal with such morons and their ignorance....
Susan told me they'd heard people walk by and say,
"I had a car just like that once..."
Yeah RIIIGHT..!! Surrrre you did, you freakin' buttplug....
go back to where you came from, iron yer Dockers, and cut another
check to the 1-800-billetfag, 'jellybean'-street-rod shop you go to....
Fucking DORKS......
But seriously,
it will almost be a shame to cover that beauty with paint....
It is so inspirational, and full of style it hurts....
and I'm not just saying that to sound 'cool', it's the TRUTH..!!
end of rant...
Thanks for the pics..!! Later, Snacks....

Yeah, its your opinion if ya think the louvers are wrong, and its my opinion to think your wrong, so who cares?
Ive seen that car in person and the louvers where the first thing I went for, man they are spot on. I wasnt totally sold on them till I saw the car in front of me. Its all about how they match the radius of the top of the fender..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

ESnacky...
I don't really know what to say but, I think I exactly know how you felt at that moment...
Similar kinda shit like that happens here in my country ALL THE TIME!!! Not that anyone overhere has a car like Cole built but, you know, with all kinds of car/bike stuff...
I know there are dorks at car shows in the USA too, but nowhere as many as here in my country...
Stories like yours can make me feel so sad sometimes...
The '36 rules! I really hope to see it in person in Oct...
This is how I've seen it two years ago (Note that, just to name one thing, there is no roof... Fuckin' amazing piece of work!!)

The chop is killer, Have to weigh in on the hoodsides, since i'm changing mine on my 37. I like the louvers, just would have kept them vertical. If the grill was slanted and the louvers matched that slant it would flow,IMHO. But unfortunately, it's not my car anyway.. At least it won't look like any other 36. He did a Great job changing it to a 3 window. Did he post pics of that conversion?

I have to jump in with ESnacky and say that the guy that came in to interrupt him and Cole was too funny. Just to see Cole roll his eyes as the guy left was classic...
by the way ES...this is Brian's friend from Hollister...
Have to agree this car in person is sick...seeing the progress made on it and the time and detail that Cole has put into project is amazing.

Ah hell, if that's all I gotta find fault with, that car is way beyond my abilities. For that, the Cole-meister gets big congrats.
As a car designer, though, those louvers ain't it. They don't line up with the A-pillar, and the progressive fanning of them looks too forced. Contrasted with the grille, they seem out of place. Maybe they belong on the Crisler Building being as deco as they are. The rest of the car is a work of art in Victorian metalworking. Out-friggin-standing!
I was coles shop a few months ago and saw the car AGAIN but closer to compleation...
Man when this car is done its going to put Cole to a whole nother level
he will be hailed by all not just us little people..but the world!!!
the Side insert looks awesome ...The pictures sure don't do it justice...
when the car is painted they will prevail...
