I got a backing plate for a sporster drum brake and was wondering what the differences are between the front and rear(both look very similar)? and weather a early backing plate can go on a later drum/hub? Thanks.

sportster and K-model rear brakes are the same from 1952 until at least 1977 that i know of.front brake was the same 1952 until about '64-5 when they got the full width unit which they kept until 1972.the best thing you can do with any front drum brake parts is sell or swap them to a resto guy or throw them away, they are JUNK! i speak from experience,i converted to disc on my '72 after i took out a little old lady's taillight with my knee-george

Well it's a -64 casting number so it probaly is a front then. The shoes are about 1/2" wider than the rear I was looking at the other day. I want to use a drum so my bars aren't so cluddered with shit on the right side(it's foot clutch).
