Went yard saling today and found another hokey 50's era tool:A tire inflation pump that is operated by unscrewing a spark plug and installing an adaptor and check valve and then connecting the hose to the tire or what ever you want to inflate.Comes with 4 adaptors:10mm,14mm,18mm,and 7/8ths(whatever that fits)along with a hose that has a tee fitting to install a pressure gauge(supplied with kit).Definitely pre-1965(no ZIP code in the address)and maybe 50's judging by the box art.Doesn't look like it's ever been used(why does that not surprise me?)and cost me the princely sum of three dollars!
Fits right in with my spark plug hole powered spray gun I posted awhile back.Thought you might enjoy this.Pics to follow.

Ya know.........I always wondered about those things. The intake charge in every cylinder is laden with fuel, right? Not much fuel but enough to drive the piston down its' bore. So then, your inflated air matress has a little gasoline it it too. I dunno........I wouldn't wanna light a Lucky Strike or even a kerosene latern around any device inflated with a 14 to 1 fuel/air mix....

That's what I was thinking. I was thinking of some guy using ot to blow up his air mattress and then laying down to have a smoke.... KABOOM!

Actually I don't think ANY of the fuel/air mixture gets into whatever it is you're inflating. The piece in the center is the pump. There is a small spring loaded piston inside that actually supplies the compressed air.It is actually a two stage affair from what I can see:The lower vents in the sides of the body vent out the f/a mixture and the vents on the upper side draw in air from the outside and compress it which provides the actual pressure.
The paint sprayer I have does essentially the same thing:the diaphragm style compressor just uses cylinder pressure to operate the diaphragm and the f/a mixture is vented out the side.Of course we haven't even talked about an explosive fuel/air mixture floating around an engine compartment with a spark plug wire disconnected or a generator brush sparking! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Here's a pic of the paint gun if you didn't see it before.

Those were sold by several manufacturers from at least the forties into the seventies. I used one, I believe the same as pictured, for years on my Nova--It was newer manufacture than yours, and came with a coupon for the 7/8", since few of the customers were running Model A's anymore!
It worked very well, and did NOT pump gas fumes. The compression of the engine powered a little piston in there and the slots on the side were air intake. Only problem was the grade Z Taiwan rubber tubing that came with it--I couldn't afford that much real hose back then, and kept cutting and splicing---
When you use it, your engine goes CHUFFACHUFFACHUFFA for a couple minutes, and you're done. I've seen Ford script ones with correct front/rear pressure for an 8N on the face.

So if you hit the Nitrous button your air mattress would be light enough to float ? No thats Helium ,never mind!
