Heard about a guy up here that lost his ass in a boat repair shop. So I go buy a bunch of stuff this weekend. I end up with a pair of BB 454's (was told the were 502's) that have been wet, flushed, dried out and filled with oil and stored for 4 years. Was thinking bout using one in the Merc after pulling the pans and intakes they look pretty good inside. Supposed to low hours engine...but then they were supposed to be 502's also. Question is, they are tall deck blocks. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to these blocks for street rod application. Got a ton of marine s*it to sell on ebay now. I am sure I will be making my money back on all of stuff, wont take much to recover $500.00. These things were loaded down with so much crap they has the poor old F150 dragging is ass trying to get this stuff home.

Do marine conversion engines turn in the same direction as car engines?

Good question and one that I had not thought of. I am sure they do...hopefully someone else on here knows. Otherwise they are only good for a boat.

I believe some don't and some rotate conventionally. When they run two engines side by side, they need them to rotate in opposite directions to cancel each other out.

Merc-guy, did you happen to get any Mercruiser 181s (fours) or 250s (sixes)? Been trying to find info on these engines (production, differences from automotive applications, etc.).

usually one turns the opposite direction if they were a pair, but 130 mph in reverse could be interesting.

I have a buddy who is a marine mechanic and he never metioned to me about revese rotation engines. he useto give me old bbc cores and they were allways standerd rotation. I would think they would change the direction of the propeller in the final drive. I don't think you'll have a problem

Running a tall deck requires a different intake manifold ....and (maybe?) distributer

Foul, Mercruiser 250's are identical to automotive 250's except they come stock with a 2 barrel carb and brass freeze plugs.

I aquired only the 2-454's, a marine 350 and a bunch of misc. crap. This guy was the Fred Sandford of the boat buisness. I will be going back up there and I will see if he has any thing like you are looking for.

I do know (or did, I will have to check) where there was an Industrial 300 six. I can look into that deal for you if your interested.

I could be wrong but I believe the cam shaft is the only difference in the opposite rotation marine long block.

Tall deck requires a special intake (or use spacers), and a special distributor I believe. Otherwise they are same as standard deck height. The reverse rotation would only be the cam, rest of engine is same. Sounds like you made a good score on the pieces you picked up.

The tall intakes are very common in drag racing circles. The tall deck is typically used for stroker motors to give extra height for the ring pack to fit above the pin. A 502 is not a tall deck to my knowledge, it is just a siamesed bore standard deck height BBC with 4.50 inch bore vs 4.25 standard 454 bore size. Stroke is same as 454 at 4.00 inches. Most of the tall decks that I am famikliar with are actually 427, with the same bore as 454 at 4.25 and stroke same as a 396 at 3.75 inches. All the 427's have forged cranks.

Measure your bore and stroke and then you should be able to confirm what you have exactly.

$500 for TWO 454's?? that was a deal

were the tall decked engines used in the big trucks?

And check that stroke--Chevy only made the tall block in 366 and 427. Don't know about the marine versions.

Well I got the answer to the question myself tonight. I guess I can't say I actually got screwed, but what I got is a pair of Generation V 454 marine blocks with the rectangle port heads, steel cranks, pair of performer carbs, aluminum intakes.... and a bunch of stuck pistons. I was a little pissed when I finally got the heads off and found that some jack ass had left both these things sitting around with the spark plugs out after they had been recovered from the bottom of the lake and cleaned up. Anyway...gonna need to go all the way through one of them at least...

Got a bunch of marine crap if anyone wants to put these 150lb manifolds on thier rod.
