So after dropping the transmission on my passenger side ring finger (its now purple and hardcore swollen) I started taking apart the tranny with the aide of my trusty factory service manual. I haven't started taking apart the gears, and I really really don't want to have to rebuild this thing. So could you guys look at the pics I took and tell me what you think I should do? The front clutch doesn't look too worn, its really pretty smooth if I pass my finger over it. The rear clutch lookes kinda funky, but is also pretty smooth. I can grab the output shaft and move it back and forth about a 1/4 inch, is that bad? Also, there is this governor thing in the housing extension, does that govern the cars speed? if so, can I un-govern it? Unfortunatly due to all of you that looked at my HAMB Drags pictures I can't link to these pics now, so you'll have to go HERE (http://photobucket.com/albums/v237/Flexicoker/Tranny/)

Thanks

Hey Flexi-
The governor just tells the trans when to shift-no effect on your top speed.I think that trans is a MX(cast iron cruise-o-matic)-not a C-6.C-6 is all aluminum and 1 pc bellhousing and main case. That one has a bolt-on bell and an iron case? What's it doing wrong,or are you just checking it out?

hhmmm... I guess I just assumed it was a C6

its not doing anything wrong that I know of, I've driven it in and out of the driveway, but never fast enough to change gears, now the engine is out and I just wanted to make sure the tranny was alright before I put everything back togethor. And the clutches looked a little weird, pretty smooth, but the rear one has kindof discolored stripes along it.

Your '62 would have a Cruise-O-Matic not a C-6...the C-6 would be later..the govenor controls the shift points not vehicle speed.

If you are running an FE motor this would be a great time to just upgrade to the better C6.
