found out my new projekt (58 biscayne) has an original positraction rear end in it - now I'm wondering how strong this rear end is - the car's original motor is a 283 - how much horsepower would this posi handle??
some infos would be great
It should hold up to what a 283 will put out, even in a heavy car like a 58. The key to making them last in heavy cars is to keep them from hooking up. Don't use slicks with any appreciable horsepower and you should be OK.
I've used a '57 posi in my roadster for 40 years, and race it hard. But it only weighs 1975lbs.

That depends on the condition of the unit and the intended use. Do you plan on using it “as is”? What motor are you using? Do you plan to run slicks at the drags? If you rebuilt the unit and ran skinny highway treads, you could throw 300 to 350 HP to it for a long time.

I'm actually planning a story on the early drop-out Chevy rears.
Weak links are: coarse splines on the axles. One side usually snaps (I think it's the driver's side).
Second weak link is the driver's side bearing cap.
Fixes: A billet bearing cap will eliminate that problem. Aubrun Gear or Eaton makes brand new differentials for them, so you can get a whole new unit.
Later Dana spider gears can be swapped into the differential, which would give you 28 splines. Add a set of Moser 28-spline axles, and you won't break an axle.
With those fixes, it won't be as strong as a 28-spline 9-inch, but it won't be that far behind. You would be able to run fairly wide street tires pretty confidently. It is a heavy car, though, but they used to run them back in the day without the 28 splines and good Moser axles.
(I realize some of those details are sketchy, and I may sound like a flake particularly because I want to write about it, but my notes aren't handy, I'm going by memory, and it's late.)

thanx -- no- I don't like to run slicks, but it should handle the 300hp line - this is important for me

I BROKE 5 or 6 of them with a 283 in a lighter 55 Chevy 150 2 door post car. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif But I was real young (16 - 17) and the 55 had a 4 speed transmission.

Now I have a stronger engine 283 in front of a old Ford Banjo.........with no problems.........but 40 years have passed...... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The title didn't register as "Gay" to me. What have you been thinking about to come up with that? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

YES, they are the same rear end.
When I was young, I could break most anything ...and did http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
If you drive it like you have a little common sense........it should be OK.

It will probably barely outlast the center driveshaft bearing.

I ran one in a 283 H.P., recording holding, F/S 57 9 Passenger wagon for many years. Ran a 538 and 513 gear on it, and never broke the rear end, twisted many axels but never hurt the pumpkin! You need to rearrange the frame a little on your car and can the two piece driveshaft, they are like the guy already said in so many words, worthless.
