whats wrong with my mid 30's ford door latch?

ok people i just can't work this one out but i think it's knackered.To lock the driver door you are supposed to push the lever down but when i do this i can still open the door.It seems like the outside door handle is pushing this inside handle up.........any ideas please? would really help.is it knackered?

Take the latch assembly out of the door. Operate it in your hand. Observe. Fix whats wrong.

Tried that ,it seems like although the latch is supposed to be prevented from working when the interior handle is down it pushed through and still opens......Marq.i'm not sure exactly how they are supposed to work.Most brit cars used model A type latches untill the 40's then went on to sealed units

disassemble the latch and you will see the wear on the parts. Build it back up with weld

I have a 36 pu latch in my hand. all you can do is unbend the tabs, take it apart and build up all the wear---unless you are missing a part---You do have the bottom part that pivots to lock?

when i look at the part that is on the interior door handle it had cut outs on it and a slot back and front almost like something should be in there holding it but i have no idea if this is the case and if it is what part goes in it...........Marq

The door latch on the drivers side only has 3 moving parts. Thats where the lock is. The inside door handle pivot is not the lock.

If you are looking at the remolt (where the inside handle is) there should be a spring to hold it in place. This keeps it from locking itself when slaming the door and also holds the handle in locked position. If it is broken or missing I have them and am doing a swap meet this weekend and can pluck it from the box while they are out. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
