i wanna know,..my first love of automobiles was due to the fact of my pops,he was a member of the east los car club the Imperials back in the late 60's...
he's moved on and is into other stuff, but ive always loved traditional lowriders,(not the shit you see in the fagazines).,anyways my 56 isnt really a "custom" its really just a early style lowrider, back when east LA was getting their grove on,,,
anyways, just wondering if there are any websites dedicated to old school lowriders,,,
i dont want to talk to idiots in there metal flaked cutlass, but interested in the old vatos from back in the day....

Remember them lowrider guys from "Corvette Summer"???
Some of their rides reminded me of the types of cars I saw being built and driven locally by the guys that my aunt ran with, mid 60s GM boats slammed and chopped with killer paint work. This was mid 70s.

butt,
I second that request. All I have found is lowrider.com. I couldn't wade through the late model bolt on shit like stereo and spoiler kit advice to find anything about O.S. hydro's, fulton visors, knock-off's or magnesium plates.
But I did recently get a book that just came out- The History of Lowriders- and it is really well done. Lots of pictures of 60's stuff that looks a lot like the cars a lot of "us" are into- supremes, skinny ww's, flake paint, etc., and of course a buch of nice Duke's Fleetlines. I got mine at Borders so it shouldn't be hard to find.Check it out.

Love the early Lowride look, My uncle had a boattail riv back in 70 - 72 time frame with spokes and thin whitewall and pinstriping... (I grew up in LA & Eagle Rock area)
I think alot of the 49-54 out there have more of a lowrider look then they do a Custom look, especially when the body is left stock.
I have some Lowrider Mags from the early days. The Imperials were one of the first clubs I remember have alot of cars in the mags... got any early pics of lowriders, post them...

My favorite thing about lowriders . . . they aren't afraid to look good . . .whatever that means to the guy building it.

But back to the topic- what about trad. forums?
The links mentioned have boards but they seem to be all about spinner dubs and '98 Eclipses with neon. Where are the real lowrider BUILDERS on-line? There is some serious craft in these things but I have never heard any discussion on-line that hints at anything beyond bolt-on posers.

I've been doing some searching... I really don't see much at all about traditional lowriding at all. Books, like a few folks have said, seem to be the only resorce when it comes to learning a bit more about original lowriders. That brown pride message board mainly seems to be flame wars, people parting out Hondas, and talking trash about white people. It'd be nice to find a good message board though... http://low-riders.com/ doesn't seem to be too bad...

I think it's because you are looking for mermaids.
Something that didn't exist as you are envisioning it.
Sure, there were "customs" that the only modification from stock was they were lowered.
And that type of "custom" may seem to have been more prevalent in "brown" communities, but it really wasn't.
What is real, is, people in "brown" communities tended to keep their cars longer than other areas, stashed them away in garages, and back yards only to bring them back out after the custom's "dry spell" that was the 70's.
It was then that a car style now known as a "Lowrider" became it's own segment of "customs"
I remember customs in the 60s, and they were everything from just lowered or hubcaps changed to hydraulics and wild customs.
There was also some people kept there cars "stock" and put every accessory Felix Chevrolet and J C Whitney sold on them, and maybe lowered them while they were at it.
Those are the cars you are probably wanting to call lowriders, but at the time they were just called "gook wagons" which is a miss-understood term today, so just accept the fact that gook just meant "goop" or kitsch or junk, to those who didn't "appreciate" the art form. I think they are called "bombs" thse days. They were just the family car then.
The car wasn't the lowrider, the DRIVER was the lowrider, just like in the song by War.
It was a driving attitude.
Ya move the seat all the way back and rest your left wrist over the top of the steering wheel, while you slouch down low in the seat maybe with your right elbow actually in the center of the seat cushion.
You peer out the windshield over the dash just to the right of the steering wheel, under the angora covered mirror.
That way you're cool, and you make a smaller target if you're cruising someone else's hood.
And it wasn't just brown people then, it was anybody who liked cruising low and slow.
It definitely took a different mind set from the guys with jacked up '55 Chevys.
The split manifold on a "custom" Chevy was strictly for the sound of the pipes, not any quest for power.
I usta know guys who drove with the second gear syncro completely out and didn't care because they'd just roll to about 15 mph in first and "go around the corner" and drop it into high gear and putt. Speeding tickets? hell, impeeding traffic maybe... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Hippies were invented by Time Magazine and Lowrider cars were invented by Lowrider Magazine.
The cars were just lowered "customs" back then.

Ha Ha...DrJ, your post about the drivers reminds me even MORE of those dudes from "Corvette Summer"....Mark Hamil hitches a ride with them and when they get underway, he asks why they are going so SLOW!! The driver tells him that's how it's done! There's a whole caravan of these early lowriders creeping through the desert at like 15mph!
LONG time to Vegas THAT way, Luke...Hydraulics instead of Hyperdrives!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Butt, if ya find a board let me know. Myself and Jeff (from the hamb)are the only trad. style lowrider fans in our area, and honestly aside from old school hotrods, they're the cars that really do it for me. I've got a 66impala and a 59Impala, Being that this style car is so rare around here, when I park it and drop it, people just freak, I'd still love to do one as a daily.

That's about the same era that Harold and his buds were building similar cars here. The photo I posted on page one of this post yesterday was taken in 1975. That chopped 67 Pontiac was the coolest thing I had ever seen at that tender young age! (I was 7 years old when that photo was taken...standing behind my aunt who took the photo!)
Interesting that there were cars like that in other parts of thecountry about the same time. Where were these pictures taken?
(I remember several 63-64 Impalas with cool paint and LOW stances hanging around the alley back then...along with a really wild Chrysler something-or-other...I think it was maybe a 68 Fury, but it was so modified I can't say for sure...long, low and several shades of blue with a chopped roof, skinny whites and chrome knock-offs. It was LOUD too...open pipes I'm sure!)
Thanks for sharing those pics!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

What I remember is white fake fur, shag carpet, light bars that flashed with the 8 track, small chrome chain steering wheels, dingle balls and lace string curtains, fancy name or club tags cut out of brass sheet and polished or chromed in the back window, totaly stock bodywork with mainly grills and bumpers customized, and flake or candy paint. Usually Caddys or Impalas. Still have them here today but they're mostly Monte Carlos with latino nudes airbrushed on the hood and trunk lids. Now they bag them but back in the late 60's early 70's they just cut coils, used spring compressors and used lowering blocks. That's why they only drove 15mph.(No suspension to speak of). You needed to go slow so you could spot the manhole covers before you dragged on them. My Chevelle was a late model mild low-rider when I first got it. When I think low-rider, I think of Cheech & Chong or "Billy" from "Gone in 60 Seconds"! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That was going on hard core on the front range in Colorado when I was in high school.
The low riders were all ways cool to me because they dug my 58 Chevy and greasy hair.
Some of them had some nice rides too.
On cat they called Tarzan had a stock 38 Buick that ran like a champ.
He lowered it and pinstriped it and that was it.
That car was in incredible shape.

praisethelowered, yeah i guess that was a trend back then with the half vinyl top.
smokin joe,ive always heard of those light bars, but yet to ever see one in real life and the way it works.from what i understand it was a pretty cool "effect"
the 64 and the 57 were both "lifted" front and back but the rest of the rides from what i understand were just lowered. the 57 had a 396 and a four speed.
you know, ive always thought of these cars i posted pics of as lowriders, but Dr.J's right, there really just mild type customs kinda like the cars some of us are building now. ,i guess it was your zip code as to what determined what it was http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Used to get the light bars from JC Whitney. They probably still carry them. All the stereo shops had bigger ones for the home system too. We tore them apart and customized them to fit the cars. The whole top of the console around the Hurst shifter in one of my cars flashed colors with the music. So did the glove box door and a custom panel the full length of the bottom of the dash. Damned girls would get so fascinated with the lights and tunes it was hard to get them to really appreciate the feel of the crushed velvet upholstery and fake fur if you know what I mean! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was just going to say, before seeing this post, so I'll say it anyway. If any of those cars, especially the '57 ventured south of Florence Blvd, it would have been considered just one of the nicer "Bellflower style" customs. The '62's even got the pipes, the "Bellflower" pipes
Except I don't remember anyone actually calling a car a
"Bellflower Style Custom". We call them that now in the custom car history stories, but then they were just "customs".
We did call the pipesbehind the rear wheels "Bellflowers", just Bellflowers, with no "pipes".
People didn't spend so much time explaining what they were doing with their cars then, they just did it. and other people said "that's cool" and maybe copied it, or just didn't say anything and walked on by.

Im only 29, but I remember the old school growing up in Richmond CA(Bay Area). Truspokes and 5.20s with buffed out white walls. Monte carlos were big. There were like 4 hydraulic shops in Richmond alone. I still have my deep dish chain steering wheel.Cruised San jose, 23rd, even went out to grafitti in motown.since the mid 90s the scene got to commercialized. I havent bought a lowrider magazine in over 6 years. I have some early lowrider magazines from like 81. If you guys wanted i could post some pics from them. The scene turned into who ever has the most money type of thing. To win a lowrider show you have to have over 80 Gs in the car.Anyways I love traditional hot rods because they represent the style that I fell in love with as a kid

Butt- Great post holmes and love the pics of your rides!
DrJ-You nailed it,,good write up!.
I grew up looking at a magazine called "Klassics & Kustoms" wich really featured more 'traditional' style lowriders. If I remember correctly,,Mr Barris had something to do with it also. I will scan in pics of some of these cars in the next couple of days cause these are exactly what you are all looking for..I remember even most of the wild/wayout kustoms being lowriders..as a kid I used to dream of becoming a 'Lowrider',,most of all,,moving out to Cali and becoming an 'Imperial'....(some dreams never come true..so call me a "Dreamer') But I use to watch Chico & the Man and just waiting for them to flash the 'Gypsy Rose'...and the Cheech & Chong movies. Shit I can't count how many of those I popped over the years cause couldn't get enough of the 'Lifestyle' or should I say 'Culture'...There was only one lowrider i recall from my area that was a Buick that was a true traditional style lolo..In fact, the guy hasn't changed a bit. Even his current ride has Tru's w/skinny whites. He has schooled me alot over the years as far as kustoms & lowriders.
Do any of you know of the first documented car and what it was?
How was the car lifted and who built it?
Sorry no prizes this time!!

Damn i missed this post the first time around. that was a good history lesson. i remember my brother taking me out with him to cruise Whitter Blvd also near "fiesta 4 drive in", Hollywood, Elysian Park, all the hot spots.
my dad told my brother that if he wanted to go out he would have to take me (his little bro) with him. so as not to get into to much trouble. my brother opened my eyes to the cruising scene. little did my dad know. my brother and I got into so much trouble and we watched each others back. my brother is a big reason as to why i got into cars and doing body work. wanting to change the body lines around and make them soooo smoooth.
it just so happens that i live up the street from Whitter Blvd now. you guys remember the movie Blvd Knights. "come back Chuco" haha "one, one eleven st holmes."

I fucking dig the pics. My pops and my uncles all have old pics that pretty much look the same. From all the stories my pops has told me and from growing up around Lowriders...Imperials are the shit!!!! They have some of the cherriest rides.. My pops was, is and always will be a lowrider from Echo X Park. Old school style. Lower it, crossbars and glasspacks. I'll go dig up some of my pops pics of his dropped 60 Impala w/ cragars. He sold it when I was born cause he needed the bread (I was conceived it that fucking 60) . I think it's always been a lil regret. That was the reason I scored my 60.

Great Post,
I too love lowriders, and 60's era customs. It is funny cuz I am knda torn as I am building my chevy. I have many influences. I have always loved customs and some lowriders (not all) The guy who own's the body shop where my car will get painted eventually is an old school lowrider. He has pushed more lowrider influenced ideas on me that I really like. I am not as worried about being "period correct", as some are, but I do not want to mix 50's and 60's era styles. No spots, lakes, red wheels, www, etc. If I was building a 50's styled custom I would consider those items. I am running 15 inch chromies right now. I had planned on switching to 15 inch astros. Now I am leaning more twards 14". I guess I am building a 60's custom with lowrider influence.

Lowsprings bringing this post back from the dead? That movie house is one of the coolest buildings in LA.
and I'm still looking for a bomba message board a year later . .
Layitlow.com is still the best I've found, but you have to wade through a lot of enpty bragging to find any tech, and everyone compares products and asks for "the hook up' to buy cheap parts more than talking about how to actually build things. It makes me appreciate the HAMB more though. It's like too many of those guys look at it from a consumer rather than a creative point of view. kinda sad. I want to know what the specs are on a hydro pump. . not just what brand it is and where you bought it, you know?
As for tradition. . . it seems like the generation gap is pretty strongly defined in that scene. The old guys drive the cool bombs and the young guys don't want anything they haven't seen in a rap video. I am sure things are being passed down, but computers may just not be thier bag.

Damn-I needed to see this post tonight. I just found out my grandpa is dying in a month from advanced Alzhiemer's. My dad's pretty shook up and he's having to call all my uncles.
My dad's family's pretty old school-no emotional outbursts here. But these were guys I grew up looking at in my dad's photo album with their Impalas and Bel Airs.
The circumstances suck, but at least I'll be able to see all these guys again http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I was born in SATX and moved to League City as a kid. Most of the lolos were Cutties with wires and plenty of ghetto bang. Almost everyone that drove one was a gangbanger (Not a generalization, a fact in a small town) This one cat had a fine candied out 64 with wires and dros. I always wanted one but my parents were worried I would get f*cked with by the cops like they did.
I still got f*cked with and had to drive a shitty car anyway...
I'm also torn between the two worlds. Not only do I plan on droppin' my '62 Impala, I want to put a 4-71 through the hood.

butt,
your monte needs a set of tru spokes to me. it looks so good now it could only be better with that change and lifted. what sort of set up you gonna use? something crazy or just a basic lift.
now a question. i've seen alot of stuff that actually says the green buick in the middle of hot rods and customs of the 60s was rumored to be the first or one of the first cars lifted. i've seen the car listed as belonging to troy hefner and other saying it belonged to zoochi. i know it was lifted by bill hines when it was a brand new car and the candy fade job was done by winfield. anybody got any other info on the car. i considered cloning it for a long time. only bagged instead of lifted and with different wheels which i have been told it got skylark wires at some point which is what i would want to run. anyone got any other info oon that car?...ken....

The info that I read in Lowrider was Ron Aguire's X-sonic was the first equipped with hydraulics. That (I believe) is a Starbird built, Watson (I know) painted full kustom. It said in the article that Ron got tired of being pulled over for being too low ALL THE TIME. So his dad told him about the hydraulic arms used on airplanes. His dad found some and equipped the car with them. The first time he was pulled over, the cop did a U-ie because he saw how low the car was. Once the cop turned around, he had already raised the car and the cop couldn't figure out what the deal was.
He went on to say he got out of that one. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I saw that this post had made it up to the top of the list again, and had to post a reply this time.
I grew up in a really brown area of Oxnard, CA in the '70s and it was all about early sixties Chebbies with Cragar SS in 13 or 14 inch diameters and 5.20s. By the '80s, I remember rollin in my buddy's "Banana Boat" pearl yellow '65 Impala wagon. It was only juiced in the rear, but it'd hit 27" with only two old school pumps powered by four 48V batteries the local fire department sold to him out the back door when they were replaced during "routine maintenance" on the trucks. The car looked wicked with the skirts on, but always looked lower with them off. I remember getting into the boat outside McDonalds when a serviceman obviously originating from the deep South stopped us to point out that we had a "flat tire". You should have seen his eyes pop when Jerry juiced it up, and then dropped it as we trailed sparks all the way around the lot from the magnesium blocks bolted under the rear bumper. One time we smuggled nine people into the drive-in and only paid for the two in the front seat. All it took was the double limo tint and a blanket to pull that one off.
Oxnard used to have a good cruising scene in the mid eighties. Saviers Road was the spot until the Crips/Bloods moved north around '88 or so. Before that, you could cruise without fearing drive-bys and nobody was selling enough drugs to fund the over-gold look yet.

I've been watching this post ever since it came back to the top, and I gotta agree with k9racer, great post! Reminds me of the old school HAMB before the newbie invasion started 3 or 4 years ago.
Anyway, I decided I've got to get in on this, too. Lowriding has always been a big part of my family. More so a few years back than now, because most of my lowriding cousins got into trouble and are doing time. My cousin Martin was probably the most hard core one. He always had a lifted kar and top notch kandy paint, as well as the best wire wheels out at the time. He always had an Alpine, a simple amp and lots of tweeters! Back then, everybody used to "bump treble"! We'd listen to Zapp, Tower of Power, War, whatever. When he wanted to listen to oldies, he'd fire up the underdash 8-track and break out some Chuck Berry or Elvis! Once in a while they would swing by my house and pick me up. I thought that was pretty kool because I wasn't old enough to drive, but I was definitely kar krazy. At that time, everyone into lowriders used to cruise 38th Avenue. It was unreal how many lowriders used to roll out there. Back then, Marty had a '72 Grand Prix with a kandy root beer brown paint job with tons of 'flake, gold and brownish pinstriping on it. Curly-Q style that the lowriders back then had. It was lifted front, back and side to side--one of the first ones in Denver. We'd hit 38th and people would go nuts when he'd start dropping sides! What a blast! I always liked when he would drop the front and lay sparks down the street. There used to be this little grocery store called Tj's that was on 38th. There were big windows all the way along the building. The store would be closed by the time the cruising started, so it was dark inside. He would always tell me to look in the windows and you could watch the sparks as you went by!
I plan on building a lowrider again some day--maybe a bomba. I've been trying to collect parts to have ready when the day comes. So far I have alot of old time accessories like a red headed flashlight and holder, rear window blinds, fender guides, curb feelers, traffic light finder, etc, etc. I'm finding that the stuff lowriders used in the 70s and early 80s are the hardest to find. The light bars that go under the dash we always called Bowmans. I've been looking for one for years and no luck. How about the red bar lights in the back window that used to flash from the center out when you'd step on the brakes? Don't know what they were called, but every lowrider had them. Also, organ pipe speaker covers. They used to be made of metal back then, not plastic like now! I did manage to score some TVs--rabbit ear antennas that went on the side rear window, as well as some big center cap Tru-Classics. What accessories or lowrider stuff do you closet lowriders have? Let's hear it.................................E

Luckystiff, regarding that green buick from Hot Rods and Customs of the 60's, that is the baddest car in that book , perfect lines, stance, paint, etc. I also like the fact that it (64buick) is an often overlooked car. Clone it!
luckystiff
10-17-2004, 10:55 AM
chris,
i considered doing a close to clone of it for years. i've taken alot of hints from that car for the rebuild. i've built 3 differnt tube grille mock up trying to get it to the perfect one like in the green car. probably the few things i would change would be wheel selection, which i have heard that car had skylarks shortly after the few pics you see of it were taken. mine's got tbird guts(66 rears, 67buckets,more comfortable) i think white guts may have looked alittle better which is dumb in my case since the black interior i have is spotless. i think i need 3 more of these cars cause i got about 3 different ways i want to build it.haha. i actually passed on another one a month or so ago because i'm out of room. if i don't build a semi clone of it this time i will in the future. oh yeah i would probably do bags instead of juiced to as this is going back to daily status when done. your right about it being a much to overlooked body style. funny i picked the car up for it's drive train years ago. was gonna put the nailhead in a '50 ford. got the buick called the guy to arrange pickup of the ford and he had sold it. i figure it's a good running car despite the rust so i reg. it and drive it. within a week i had myself a love affair i've never had with a car. i have no idea why it's stuck to me like it has. it will never be sold. who knows i change my mind about paint for this car a bit and it's months before it's close to repaint anyhow. imitating winfields spray job on it intimidates me a bit to. those are mighty big shoes to step into.
anybody got any more info on the green car???????? i've heard bits and pieces of stuff over the last few years. it was supposedly in a coupla magazines in the mid 60s but i haven't found 'em. one source says it belonged to one guy. another source says zocchi had the car built and sold it to that guy a few weeks after it was done. i have heard confirmation that winfield did the paint and hines did the suspension. other than that the car is a mystery. anyone know zocchi that may can confirm if he had the car built? anyone see Gene and can ask him about it? i'd like to find more info if i could. who the owner was what happened to it and so on...ken....
thanks homies. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

This thread just keeps coming back..
Butt, I will be glad take the blame for that this... i have alwaysliked the classic lowrider look but never had the courage to actually build one (thou the wagon has hints of it in its styling). I actually have a set of 59 Impala 2 bar spinners that I bought over 10 yrs ago to someday put on a set of large hub wires for the old school look (you mount the spinner on the flat cap)
If I could get 14x7 on the wagon I would buy a set but its way to low in the front to allow it (would sit the cross member on the ground) ..... unless I install front air (to go with the rear)..
I dig the Sonic X, it needs to be cloned by someone..

From their site, "wide wheels". Is that the new tv term for 'fourteens'. Too bad I don't have cable. Hmm, maybe I'm better off not seeing it.
Boones, I took this shot last week at a local show.

 From the site: Boyd's task is to rebuild a 1959 Impala nicknamed "Ghetto Princess." The crew turns this two-door coupe into a classic low rider with an extra low stance, wide wheels, and big block Chevy and speedster style.
I don't think Boyd knows what the definition of classic is!

I recently bought a '66 IMP 4 door hardtop thats gettin the lowrider treatment. Mine will someday have bags and shaved handles with Cragars or Astros and a spray bomb lace roof(hopefully this weekend), but first I need it to run for more than 30 seconds.

BUT I ALSO AM INTO CUSTOMS, AND rods!!! not STREET RODS, BUT "real" HOT RODS!!!! i have a '49 fleetline, and '57 olds, and am in the process of getting a "32 5 window"....CHEVY!!! so keep in touch i see that we see the same thing, i also see others on here with the same feelings but are even MORE hesitant on the "lowrider" subject. Lay it low is a great site but the server sucks, there are times when you cant even get on the forum, and then when you do all you get are error messages. THEY NEED TO FIX THAT PROBLEM BIG TIME.
