Well I bought this thing, said sunnen on it so it should be good, right. Now I can't figure out what it is used for. Here is a pic of the front of it.

Well I can't post all of the pics, so I'll do it this way. BTW it says Sunnen Grinder model LB 17844.

hard to tell from your pictures , but it looks like it's a hone for resizing connectiong rods

That's what I thought at first, but the stones are like a foot long and that threw me off.

You've bought yourself a GEN-U-WINE Sunnen hone that is used to hone spindle bushings, big and small ends of connecting rods and anything else that needs a hole resized to EXACT specifications. Your last picture is of some mandrels that hold the honing stones.
I can't tell if it is complete because they are usually mounted on a large cast iron base with the motor mounted on top and a tray below to catch the honing oil and return it to the pump for recycling. There should also be 3 point dial gauge which attaches near the honing head to check the progress of the hole resizing. I worked for a company that sold those along with other engine shop equipment. Sunnen builds the finest honing machines on the market. You may have heard of a Sunnen CK10. This is the machine that finishes the bores in an engine block to an exact size and crosshatch that is required for high performance applications.

Wow, thanks Fab. Evidently the base and pump are missing, as is the indicator. No biggie, I can build something to oil it with, and check progress as I go. Not to shabby for $30 at a garage sale huh.
