Its 22 gauge steal, that i over payed from Lowes.. What are you going to do, when your desprate?

As you can some what see in the Pic, The curviture is pretty crazy. I had to make a Wooden Die , cause Im too broke for the Metal Dollys.

Of course, 30 minutes into pounding it broke. and i was up shits creek. bent it by hand from there..

Tomarrow ill finish the welds and start the Drivers side...

Looks like you're putting some hours into that thing!

I would either cut a door into it... or better yet, just weld a door body line into it (a unique, non-Ford shape) using flat stock. Similar to the way a fiberglass T has that door outline... it'll make it look more like a real tub, and not all slicked up.

Sam.

Here is a little something you could try. I learned this from an old guy my age when I was your age. Go out to the wood pile and pick out a couple nice dry rounds about 14" to 16" accross. Get a good wood chisel or anything you can goudge out the end with. Now make a progressive bowel in the end the shape you want the curve to be. It won't brake and you can change the shape as needed. I probably have 8 or 10 different veriatys around the shop. If you make the bowl smooth enough and good enough, you can get the exact shape you want.

Are you talking about , The wood dies, made out of Tree Stumps?
Uncl Ian gave me a metal fab link. They showed how to make one.. I got the instructions saved to my pc.. I should try it some time.. Right now i just want this roughed out in a week or so.

That would be what I mean. Cheep, easy and durable. My Dad used to say, If your good you don't need all those fancy tools. Just give me a tree stump and a rock and get out of my way. I guess things have come a long way since then but I still find myself ocasionly using the tree stump.

Rat Rodder a good source for your sheet metal is area body shops. You can get metal from hood's trunk's &roof panel's. i'm sure most shop's would let you have all you want for free. But more important they will already have a slight crown (curve)already in them saving you alot of shaping .Roof panels are best . Hope this helps.

Looks like you are doing fine with your project. Be careful welding on a wood floor with a sheet of cardboard nearby. A bucket of water is a good thing to have in the shop.

This is true. I throw pieces of sheet metal away every day large enough to do almost any kind of repair.

I cut a tree down next to where I built my garage. I left the stump about three feet. I use it often for shaping metal and just beating on things in general.

Hey, your getting ahead of me. I need to do that too. I also need to make a back panel. I am making a couple templates for the curvature and heading to the pick and pull with my generator and sawzall.
Did you cut out the inner/old part? I was going to leave it and then it dawned on me that I couldn't get at the back with a dolly, duh.
Keep us posted on the progress.

I did go to the Junkyard and look for a roof crown. Found a good lookn roof , some kind of 80s import. Guy told me , itta be atleast 25 bucks to cut the section that i needed... Thats Jerseys Junkyards for ya!

Didnt pay That Much!

And thanks 37kid! but i put that peice of card board down after i welded it up.. wanted something to neal on, vs dirty floor.

Right now its all welded up ready to be grinded down.. Wish my arc welder worked cause im going through disks like hell..

We're on page two of this thread and nobody asked what this body is from. My guess is @1923 Dodge. Will you need to stretch the cowl to gain some foot room? If you are going through disks maybe you need to use something stiffer like a cutoff wheel. If the welds turm blue you are getting things too hot.

as far as bowled tree stumps go there called dishing stumps, i do some armouring in my spair time, i use them to make sheild bosses and stuff, also, if you use a hard wood like oak for the stump and you need to make a deep bowl shape heat it to a bright red or orange( i use a forge for this but a rosebud tip should work) and get a dome faced hammer, the heat makes it easier to strecth but the wood smoke ins anyoying, you can make a dishing hammer by gring the face of an old sledge into a semi circle. this works good but make sure you use some rather thick sheet or youl crack threw it in the deep bowls.

Willmont, I stand corrected. I'll now and forever call it dishing it out not bowled. Leave it to a Viking to point and pick on the small things. By the way, How the Hell do you heat hard wood to a bright red or orange?
