Say I'm lookin for a really high gear for my 9". Like maybe one for a top secret B'ville project. I'm lookin for something in the 2.00 to 2.50 range. What is avalible from where, and is there anything avalible from the factory in that range that I could find in a junk yard? Thanks.

The 9 inch rear from 77-79 Lincoln Versilles (fancy Granada), had something like a 250:1 ratio. First thing everbody gets ride of after they find one.
I would check mid to late seventys Lincolns and full size Fords. Before overdrive was standard like now, alot of these cars had ratios your looking for.

2.47:1 is the lowest ratio I could find for a 9".
I found a tech article on a Bonneville-bound diesel truck that states that they were unable to locate an appropriately high gear for their top-end needs in a 9". However, they were able to find a 1.89:1 ratio in a different rear. http://www.bankspower.com/Banks_Sidewinder/rear_axle_system.cfm
Good luck!

The highest I have seen is 2.80. Check out the set-up sheet on RacersGuide.com at this address:

Those are aftermarket ratios. This (http://www.ultrastang.com/Rearinfo.asp?Page_ID=1) page has some pretty good home-brewed 9" info.
"The 1977-1980 Lincoln Versailles came standard with the 9-inch disk brake rear end. However, there are only four ratios to be had with any of these rear ends. They are: 2.47:1, 2.50:1, 2.75:1 & 3.00:1."

Lincold rears from the late 70s and 80s commonly had gears rangeing from 2.50:1 to 2.89:1.

Yep, what they said - 2.50:1 (ish) is about as high as yer gonna find for a 9" - It's about the physical limit of the gears too.
Not tall enough - run some really tall tires! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the quick info guys.
Am I putting to much stress on anything else with such a high gear?
