DATELINE; AUG. 26, ANAHEIM, CA.
After nearly eight years of loyal service RIZ tells PRIMEDIA to stick it where the sun don't shine.
Seriously guys, I'm leaving R&C as of Sept. 3rd. It was a tough decision, leaving my friends and co-workers but the corporate mindset was just way too much to take -- I held on as long as I could but it got to the point where it just wasn't worth the heartache. On a lighter note, I will be staying in the hot rod & custom car field (just not in publishing)and will still write freelance once in a while.
I want to thank everybody that supported me over the years -- it meant a lot to me and I appreciate it more than you'll ever know. Meanwhile, I'll see ya on the road!

Good for you Riz. I think Primedia has stripped the soul out of magazines nowdays myself. I can't even imagine what it must be like working for that corporate monster.

Wow suprising, but I can sympathize I started working for the company I'm at 8-9 years ago and watched it turn from a "mom and pop shop" to a corporate nightmare, and I'm also looking to get out before it's corporate greed destroys it's self, and I'm out on my ass.
Good luck to ya. Welcome to the HAMB.

Good luck man. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Well, That just sucks.
But I'm not surprised.
R&C has been way too GREAT lately for the corporate schmucks to like it.
I'm going to miss what the way you've been steering it has done for the magazine.
May wish I hadn't just re-subscribed, too... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Good luck Riz!
Remember what another burned out R&C'er did to unwind and rewind?

Leave them on a high note,
I can totally empathise with you. I too have my days where I just want to hang it all up and go back to what I was born to do. I hope you find your happy place again and if you ever find yourself in the Phoenix area looking for a cold one and a dog to wrestle, just stop on by. You know the way..

Liked your work at Classic Truck's as well. Leave whore mongering to the suit's.....at-least you will not have to eat from their menu any longer. Maybe The Rodder's Journal may try a monthly magazine and pool all the real talent fed up with Dictatorship's of Greed.

You will be missed, if not by the folks who bankroll the mag then by the ones that actually read it. I sure hope it doesn't turn into the Goldchainer's Digest http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Screw them, share some of that tech with us HAMBers!
Man Riz, I am glad to see another one of the good old boys getting out from under the thumb of that place. Seems like a lot of the old-school guys (guys who where there back when I worked there) are getting out before the wheels come completely off the train.
Heck in the past couple years they have lost Cameron Evans, Randy Fish, Scribe, Shane Reichardt, Kevin Wilson, Dan Sanchez and those are just the people who QUIT that i can think of off the top of my head. That doesn't include all of the people that have been let go (like dumbass Jerry Dexter). Pretty soon there isn't going to be anybody over there who can say that they even remember Tom Mcmullen or Ken Yee-- except RF. Some day he'll end up owning that place some how.
bad for R&C...
good for H.A.M.B...

.........OK all you asskissers.........make the bitch do an "Intro!" Fair's fair!
Just KIDDING! Rod & Custom has been my favorite magazine since the late 50's. It has gone through many changes over the years as have most of us. I had stopped reading it for a long time. I just got back into it the past few years. Probably the only "newsstand" magazine I buy regularly. Never really thought about it, but I guess it IS owed a lot to the leadership?? I was sad when Rick Amado left, but the "quality" was still there. Looks like I won't have to hunt through the grocery stores anymore.
Still got Kustoms Illustrated, Rolls & Pleats, Rev, Magneto and I hope......Wrench.
Thanks for the memories and wishing you all the best! (from one more ass kisser!) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey Court,
Hope all is well. Got your message, I'll give ya a shout soon.
To all the rest of ya, thanks a bunch for the kind words it means a lot to me. I'd hoped to get R&C back to the way it was when I stood by the newsstand waitin' for the new issue to hit, but I finally realized after nearly nine years (I mis-calculated earlier) that it was like shovelin' shit against the tide. Anyway, not sure the new gig will allow me enough time to HAMB it up very often, but I will poke my head in once in a while -- maybe just enough so I don't keep forgetin' my damn log in!
All my best to all of the best. riz

So, Riz, whats the new gig?

Oh well, there goes R&C. Riz, I gotta thank you for putting out a damn fine magazine. I looked forward to it every month whilst you were the editor, I'm sure it will turn to shit now. I'm hoping it doesn't because it's got a proud heritage.
Say what you will about OSR and CKD, as of right they're the only rags that speak to the average shadetree yahoo, albeit in some foreign rockabilly tongue.

Oh, well - you will be happier away from the Primedia Monster... I know that Courtney was.
You really made a differnece @ R&C... really cut down on the mass produced hot rod shit and turned the focus on the home built (real) rods... Thanks for good reading and pix... Let us know where you land.
I might just have to let me subscription laps...

Aww, that's cool Riz. Sad to see you leave R&C. I think the hotrod flavor that you brought the mag is the only reason I liked it. It'll probably go to all street rods now. That bites. Hopefully you'll get time now to do all the things you've been wanting to do. Still building that '54 chevy pu? That project looked way cool! I liked the budget beater too.
