Miami-Dade County, Florida

Dade County purchased and installed ten Chrysler Air Raid Sirens in 1953. The location of nine of those sirens has been identified (below). None are known to remain in place. It's likely that the Chrysler Siren owned today by "Big Daddy" Don Garlits was once one of the Dade County Chryslers. This is the only system known to include both 12-0 and 13-2 engine cowlings.

There was a TV series over here in the UK presented by Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane called Coltrane's Planes and Automobiles. In one episode he went along to see Garlits and they fired-up the siren. It was fantastic to watch and hear. The camera and sound crew were in pain from the sound.

There was a reprint of the article that appeared in the Tampa newspaper about Garlits removing the air raid siren from it's Tampa location in one of the auto magazines awhile back. Can't remember which one, and I'm too lazy to go through my collection to find it.
Anyway it involved a large crane, and the tearing apart of some of the structure it was housed in. I think the building was to be demolished and he was asked if he would be interested in aquiring it. Wonder how long it took him to respond to the inquiry?
