OK OK I know it is worth what you think it is worth is what most of you are going to tell me but I haven't the faintest as this is new and uncharted grounds for me. This guy offers me a '51 Ford Club Coupe and a little cash for my bike and now he wants me to tell him what his car is worth to me. I have never dealt with this era car before and have not actually seen the car in person but it seems he is a straight shooter.
Here are some pics

Naw, I ain'ta gonna slam you for it...NEVER tell a potential deal what his car is worth...let HIM tell you what he wants for it...If it's strictly a straight across trade...go for it...but check out everything first, including engine, tranny, rear-end, all the running gear...that's the major problem area...a body and interior can be fixed. I don't know what kind of bike you got, nor do I have any knowledge of what bikes go for, but the deal seems like a fair trade to me, especially if you're getting cash to boot. Is the car titled and does he hold the legal title?

Well, if it's a good-solid body, runs and drives, it got to be worth $2500.00 - $3500.00.
I can see it done in many cool ways, so do you own it yet?

Pic's can be decieving, but If it is as nice as it looks (and depending on what the engine is/looks like) I'd say it's a $7000-8000 car... but It's hard to tell from the pics...
It looks real super clean (in the pic's)..
post some pic's of your bike and I'll give you my thoughts on the trade value...

It looks as if there are no spark plug wires, and (i think it's the master cylinder) seems to be covered in tinfoil...
I dunno if the rebuild was that fresh, or at least that good.

Do you KNOW anything about engines, CREW? The plug wires arch across the motor in front of the carb...see those four dark wires...THOSE are flathead plug wires...there's four on each side and they run into the distributor right at the front of the engine.

Yeah I know it and that is where the deal stands. He will not give me a price on what he wants for the car only says that he has this car for partial trade against my bike which he saw on E-bay. He knows that my "Buy IT Now" price is $9,500. He wants me to make an offer and I'm way to hesitant to do so without seeing it first and if we are talking two way different prices then I will not even take the time to travel to see it. I wish I had the "Grumpy Gene" that will let me wheel and deal so effortlessly.
Oh Grumpy where you at buddy ol pal? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Looking at your bike and the relative pics of your car, I personally would say the car is worth about half of your bike. That's just my opinion and dealing with pics only.

looking at the pics of the car and bike i would expect at least 4-5 thousand from the guy if not more depending on how solid the car is
Be aware that shoebox Fords are extremely rust prone, around the window frames, door bottoms, rear quarter joints and frame to body stringers, not to mention inner and outer rockers. I've seen many shoeboxes that looked great on the surface but had serious rot underneath.
I'm not sworn to any one make but with those Fords there's no way I'd buy one without seeing it.
The blacked out Pontiac grille's kinda scary too.
Make sure you bring a magnet with you.
Good luck.

DO NOT TRADE YOUR BIKE FOR THAT CAR EVEN IF HE GIVES YOU
MONEY. Looks to me like that car needs lots of cosmetic work as well as detail work to make it really nice like your bike. The money he gives you , you will end up putting right back in the car plus lots more. Really nice coupes are worth 12-15K if all done and finished. THAT CAR NEEDS WORK.Since seller won't state a price he's hoping you make too high an offer. Sell your bike separately and take that $$$ and buy a really nice coupe - not a project. But, no matter what you do, go look at it before you buy it or any other car. If it was worth keeping, he wouldn,t be selling it unfinished like it is now. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I would be leary of the ol' hose down trick. If they wet the car down and take some pics, they have got to be hiding something. May sure you check it out in the daylight and it is dry. Good luck. If the seller isn't hiding anything it would make a most bitchin' ride.

Black car means the body work better be spot on. I may be the pics but the work around the headlights looks suspect to me. NEVER buy a car sight unseen. Pictures always look much better. If you are not in the area maybe you can find someone on here to check it out for you. A knowlegeable third pary opinion is a good idea. Just my nickles worth.

Here's a pic of a nice solid supposedly Texas Shoebox. It has a decent '53 Merc flattie hooked up to a 3 speed. The interior is a decent older "Tuck 'n Roll".
The side shot looks like it's a fairly straight piece. nicely painted.
Well, I got to tell ya that the sides are as wavy and lumpy as a quikie can be. The body is not properly sanded or prepped for paint. The sides have a sandpaper quality and the paint was absorbed by the material. They want $14.500 for it.
Now they ain't making these lately http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and I could see buying this car for maybe $9000.00 and still having the paint and body redone. It does have a lot of period perfect stuff. But at the asking price, well it ain't that nice. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Just 2 cents worth. Pics are deceiving and I guess ya gotta go see it.
Hope I got your back.

Ask a HAMBer in the area to look at it for you. That's what I did when I bought this shoebox out in Utah (I'm in Michigan). It worked for me. It was as good as advertised. Good luck.

Theres a guy in sandusy with a 52/53 two door. Dont know if it is what your looking for or just fell upon this deal. Its a straight six and its not as nice as this one looks but you can make it what you want. I guess he was using it as a daily driver now it is sitting. Like I said it needs work but probally 900.00 will take it. Seems to be all there.

As a former shoebox owner myself, that one looks to be about a 5 to 6 thousand dollar car.. That being said, I would say that car is NOT shiny black, in case you didn't already notice. The car is soaking wet when he took those pictures, you can see where the door meets the front fender the water is starting to dry, and it's FLAT..
If you like flat black, that's cool, but unless the guy told you the car has no shine to it, guarantee he's a shifty mother.. be careful man, seriously.
Me? I wouldn't do it. Tell him to sell it first and talk to you about your 9500 bucks you want in cash for you bike. Gotta pay to play, no bucks, no buck rogers!

Around here a NICE shoe gets between $6-9 thou. That looks like a $3500 car to me. And whoever rebuilt the motor doesn't put a whole lot of pride in his work, I would've at least done a decent rattle can job and tidy it up some. Looks really fishy. Look at it, if you want it offer him what it's worth, which is probably alot less than he thinks it is.

Update: the car is Flat Black and the motor was freshened up not a complete rebuild. It needs a headliner, door solenoids installed (he has 'em) and the steering box has some play in it but he has one that he had rebuilt for $380.00 ready to put in. He says it is a driver/project and he wants 6 grand for it. I'm hearing a little voice saying NO Don't do it. I need another project like a hole in the head.

WOW! A few months ago there was a guy here with a black two door, nice newish paint, new interiot (red velour , but still new) and a clean, quiet flathead for six grand. I say run away.

To me, In those pictures that car looks wavy as hell....
I'd get somebody to/or go look at the car first...
If it is worth messing with, tell the cat you'd take the car and 8,000-10,000 for your bike....ok, maybe 6,000-10,000
then sell the car on e-bay for 2500-3000, you just got 8500-13,000 for your bike!
or just tell him to piss-off http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
