so i'm making the perches for my spring behind setup.
i cut the boss off of the perch pin and i plan on welding a 1/2" fine bolt to the back of it. my question is this...
as you see it, is there any inherent advantage to leaving the hex head on the bolt, or dis advantage to removing it and just using the stud? me thinks it wil be stronger, and easier to weld with the head on, BUT it wont look quite as clean. what say you??

I'd leave it on. After welding I would grind and file so there are no remnants of the 6 points on the head....smooth it off. You will be left with a nice flat surface to butt up against the squared ends of the spuds that you will weld through the wishbones.

I'd consider turning/grinding the bolt head round,
then chamfer the head of the bolt to ensure plenty of weld penetration.

If you do a real nice job of welding,it will clean up nicely,
like SJ suggested, and still be strong enough.

Yeah....what Ian said. That's how I did them years ago but I forgot.

What process are you going to use to weld this??
If you MIG it, you will need to chamfer the bolt head greatly to assure good penetration.
I would HATE to see that perch break.

Which reminds me:
Two birds are sitting on a perch: one says to the other:"You smell fish?"
