Well, going fast for cheap IS on topic, but...
Whattya you other bike nuts know about the 1987 (first model) Yam FZR 1000? Other than they were the epitome of badass when I was in 8th grade...

I just know that a lot of those high displacement 80's crotch rockets were often running high 10's and low 11's out of the box. And now they're cheap cheap cheap!
There is probably no faster vehicle for the money.
And yes, you're right about this being off-topic. There isn't anything in this post about Jesse James, Ol Skool Rodz, tattoos, rockabilly, or anything!
Well you asked and I've got soem nomex undies on. I like Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Hondas in that order. This comes from years of experience. I would rather have most all European bikes first, just my preference. I'm big on Ducati, Moto Guzzi, KTM, and BMW's. I've built more than few FZR's for roadracing and a few for drags. I really like the Yamahas. They're put together well. Last. And can be brutaly fast. You can get about 130hp at the rear wheel with just basic work. Pull the motor apart and you're looking at more like 160's. And that'll last. Handling is decent stock and can be made better. There were wuite a few running in WERA and CCS endurance races in the late 80's early 90's. Seemed to be the privateer choice for a while.
I'm trying to get some PIMP status so I can get another Duc and a Guzzi. Oh and I'm going to recreate my high school bike, a 78 RD400 that was not even close to stock. That was 82 and it'll be much better this time....

Latest trick in the UK for Kit Car buildrs is to drop a late model Jap bike engine into a featherweight home built car.
These motors have 180 reliable horsepower in an engine you can literally carry under one arm, and they have the tranny and clutch already built in!!!.
One company put TWO of these 180hp motors into a small street legal kit car, and promptly ran a 2.8 second 0-60mph time. Which, coincidentally, is faster than ANY OTHER production car you can buy on the face of this planet.
Right, er, back to REAL cars now.......mumble... mumble.. V8,.... mumble ..rust, mumble oil leaks,.....welding...

Theres a guy with a 19k mi 1000 asking $2200... try finding THAT in a ducati! And an old fzr wont get stolen as fast...
I actually stopped into Pro Italia in Glendale just to drool... Somebody tell those assholes Miami Vice got cancelled like 15 years ago... treated me like a fucking ghost-- invisable.
Not like I'd be dumb enough to buy a new bike ever, but I have good enough credit to finance ANY individual piece of candy in that place, (might have to shack up with said bike in a cardboard box, but still!) hell, down payment to boot. I wont do business with assholes, and they'd be the local parts source.
That, and big laugh was a 94 ss (not sure if it was a cr or not, probably) with 32K and banged up fairings for $5300 asking.
I think the Ducati fetish will be realised later on...
meanwhile I can get one of these for what I could sell off a bunch of my junk for, and not really dig into the ol savings...
Cool, good to know that these are particularly tough engines, in terms of longevity. I think 130hp will do just FINE for a while!
