I am running a 51 ford v8 motor in my model A coupe.
I timed it a few degrees before the mark.
I can't find any specs in my motors manuals besides
where the mark is.
Are they supposed to be on the dot, which seems like
tdc to me.
It runs pretty good where I have it but I just got it
running a few days ago and have not taken it more than
a few blocks trying to work out all the bugs

any help is appreciated
thanks

The dot is the stock timing point, I think about 2-4 degrees or so BTDC.

I time my 51 8ba on the mark. Total advance is 17 deg. at about 3000r.p.m.

You can vacuum time it if it is a modified engine, just keep advancing it while watching a vacuum guage to get the highest reading, and back off about 1 inch from the highest reading. Try that setting, and if it pings, back it off a bit. It works for me.
