It's raining and we have taken over the media
center of the hotel. I hope they let us back
next year.

It was worth the 900mi trip from Dallas.

Is this place great or what? I dont know what the hell happend with Tuck in Eyeballs roadster, but I do know that a dually with wet pavement does do a hell of a nice burn out on the street! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The show KICKED ASS!! We easily had 150-200 cars on the lot and a bunch more across the street!! Pictures to come. Thanks to everyone for coming out! HAMBers came from TX, MI, WI, IL, OH, PA, CA, MO, MN, IN and one of the Dakotas!

THE BEST CAR EVENT I"VE EVER BEEN bar none, with the exception of Speed week at B'ville. The show kicked ASS. Loads of cool cars, cool folks, bitchin music and TONS of comRODerie. There were OVER 60 HAMB members in attendance.

The powers that be pulled off exactly what they intended. There were no exceptions to the rules regarding your hot rod HAD to be traditional to get on the property. Folks that had billet, tweed, etc, were pointed to the parking area across the street. EVERY hot rod in shop parking lot and grass areas were exactly that, a true hot rod in every sense of the word. Every single car there was a pleasure to see.

The "show" concluded at around 9pm with TONS of HAMB folks heading back to the Microtel for an evening of drinking and socializing, like we haven't been doing that for the last 12 hours. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif A Hokey Ass group shot was just taken in the lobby with approx 25 HAMB folks in it. I'm sure this photo will be posted tomorrow from one of the dozen or so cameras we used.

For me, this was the most awesome conclusion to a perfect hot rod cruzn summer. It is now a yearly must do event for me.

I realized on wednsday night that I could have rigged flame throwers on my Plymouth. To little to late cause all my supplies are stored at the folks house. Had I known, I would have made the extra trip. 'course there was no way I could have competed with some of those guys. They put on a good show, at a great event. Can't wait till next year, eight plugs in the Hemi, and two in the tailpipe http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seeing the Cheaters play in the corn and DESTROY a poor farmer's income...that's hilarious.

The story of the corn field goes like this...
A bunch of us Cheaters were on the side of the road waiting for someone in the group we were travling with. Let us alone for a while we will find some way to get into trouble. So one thing leads to another and we start throwing corn cobs at each other. The farmer pulls up and Jesse and I are in the middle of corn rows throwing corn at each other. The farmer wasnt happy about us destroying his way of making a living, but I was willing to pay him for the corn cobbs we threw, and I even wanted to ask him how much it would cost if I could stay and throw corn all day. Bob put it best when he said ...I could watch the CHEATERS get yelled at all day. It wouldnt have been the same without getting into some kind of trouble, I wont even mention the go cart track.

Stay gold
Chris

That is some funny shit Drew. Just wait, one night, you will be sleeping, dreaming of carl's small bed, and I will appear out of nowhere, pants down with a big blue horn, the sound will be frightening, the walls will shake from the tremendous blast of the blue horn and it will scream, "Cheaters LOVE DREW".... and then it will go away for a while....and then appear again, with the same tenacity, overwhelming your boules forcing you to CRAP your pants with laughter. And it will go on and on till you tell carl he is your favorite person...

Anyway, had a great time. Playing with corn, smashing go-karts, throwing golf balls, blowing the horn till i turned blue, telling strangers that i love them, falling on the floor due to others peoples negligence http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif and watching hollywood chase Bob around with his camera (nice to meet you evel) and getting tatoos drawn on me with marker.

Boy am I ever happy to say that I made it to the pile-up and even more happy to say that I was able to meet some HAMBers.... FINALLY!! This was the first time for me to meet anyone from this board and it was a pleasure.

I met about a half dozen HAMBers. I realize that is bad considering the number of members present, but so many of you were there that I knew it would be impossible to meet you all. Plus I couldn't tell a HAMBer from a regular person just by looking at them and I wasn't prepared to walk around asking - hey!! You from the HAMB?. So I just partied like I was supposed to.

I took my dad with me just for kicks. We got there early in the morning and there were just a handful of cars. I got kinda worried that the show would flop. At mid morning cars came flooding in like sweet rain water through a dry creek bed. All of a sudden there was this undescribeable feeling that began to come over this unassuming place. A normal looking body shop in the middle of nowhere, Ill. It was electric! The cars were just right, the weather was just right, the music was great, and everyone was there to have a good time. I saw no pissing contests all day long and noone there was bashing anyone else's efforts concerning the building of thier cars.

I heard Paso John say that is was like going to 5 Pasos all at once. Like a super concentrated version of his favorite show.

Yea, there was barely enough room there to walk in between the cars and it was elbow to elbow, bumper to bumper, but somehow that is why it was so rad.

I only wish I had stayed at the microtel and mingled more, and I wish I could have stayed at the show until dark (I had to leave by 4:00 so I could take my daughter back home).

I have pictures to post but I think my pictures all look exactly like the ones that I have been seeing. There was only so much room to stand and get a pic that I think just about all pics were taken from about the same viewpoints. I will refrain unless I think I have something different. I shot about 4 rolls of film.

Best show I have been to for many years. It reminded me of the Harley rallies my dad took me to as a young child, before the RUBS and the milk and cookie type shit that goes on now, when bikes were raw and homebuilt, not bought...

....congrats to those of you who were involved in making this thing happen. (I need the old thumbs up smilie we used to have).

I was trying to think about what made the show so special. It wasn't JUST because it was ALL traditional rods and kustoms in a sea of muscle cars and billet mobiles. Then it dawned on me... the show was like one huge party where everyone drove REALLY cool cars!!

[/ QUOTE ]

I've been thinking the same thing... what exactly made the show so special and I've come to the conclusion, it was the people. You can have all the coolest rides in the world in one spot but without cool folks driving them, all you have is a bunch of cars. EVERYONE on Sat was so friendly, outgoing, and just wanted to have a great time. No one cared who drove what. Everyone loved all the projects that were there and I overheard lots of folks complimenting each other on the work done to their cars. No one cared where they parked, there were no attitudes. The left coast doesn't have anything on the midwest when it comes to throwing a kick-ass traditional hot rod and kustom show/party.

The people there made the difference. HAMB folks were there enmass. It was awesome to see some old buds and meet so many new ones.

Here's a copy of the same MicroTel lobby shot. I'm going to try to name everyone in order

http://tigger.uic.edu/~jwisla1/hamb1.jpg
Left to right:
front row: WowCars, Mel, Flt-Blk, MarkX

2nd row, kneeling: Bruce, Eyeball, Roadstar, Bugman, PBRmeASAP, CarArtNick on red cooler

3rd row: HotRodLadyCrusr, CherryBlossom, Chuck Fahr, Tweeked47,

Back row: MrGasser, PasoJohn, Tuck, Sparky54, KustomBuilder, Can't tell, Hellfish, Mojo66, TopDeadCenter, Scallop53.

I also took quite a few photos, but most look like all the others. What I do have though is some cool people shots, lots of HAMB folks. I'll post some of those tonight.

Again, thanks to all those involved in pulling off this great event. Your hard work was very much appreciated. Looking forward to next year already.

Another amazing thing about the show was that surprisingly few cars got turned away. People seemed to "get" what we were doing and respected our show. Sure a few billet boys got pissed an chirped their tires, but most parked across the street, came in and had a good time anyway! Drew aka Abomber30 is such a NICE guy that I'm surprised he could turn anyone away, but he did.

MarkX, man it was great meeting you and FltBlk! No one could believe you guys drove up from Texas. Some of us Chrome Czars are going to try and drive down to your show in the Spring. Maybe we can get a HAMB caravan going down. I know Magnet will be at the Drags next month.

Aww Geeze....

You Cheaters are tight... in a brotherly lend a hand kind of way.. not neccesarily gay .. but nice like that.

We just like to say that you are gay.. gives us something to talk about.

Hunnertcar pileup was great... it was great last year.. and will probably be great next year.

Cool thing is, that most midwesterners are hard up for cool shows like that.. we read about them and see the pics from the mags that cover the sunny southwest... but we never see it in the midwest.. thats what got us thinking to get the pileup rolling.

It takes a bunch of cool no attitude love of hot rod type of people to make it happen, A bomber and Hellfish just happen to be the "Lets Do this" kind of people.

Thanks to them for giving us this oportunity to brink beer and bask in the glow of MIDWESTERN TRAD ROD(tm).

I tell you... if i had a tv show that ran along the lines of Choppers inc or west coast choppers.. but was traditional rods...

I would define the midwestern traditional style rod.... i would bring in Abomber, Bob Bleed, some of the Cheaters, a few Emperors, a couple Road Rockets and a sprinkling of guys from all the midwestern clubs... i would film it at Marty and sons ... we would have lunch at Diamonds (strip club) .. and build a sweeeet ass ride... that thing would motor AND look good all at the same time

Just dreamin... just dreamin.

Thanks again, everyone, for behaving, leaving attitude at home and for making it all happen.

I've read all the " Pile Up " posts and I couldn't agree more about the kool vibe at this show.

I've been to alot of rod runs and street machine events in the past, but this was the greatest show I've ever been to.

I still can't get over how kool it was and what a great cross section of people were in attendance and that I met. I still have a mellow afterglow(TM) since saturday. I've been talking about this show to all my co-workers and other friends.

It was a gas meeting other HAMBers. I couldn't believe there were so many. I wish I would have met many more. It was quite an honor to meet Hotrodladycruiser. She is everything I thought she was and more. What a Hotrodder and a fine young lady. I wish I could've met Abomber, next time. It was great meeting Flatblack and MarkX at Mike Zenors hospitality lounge, nice pick up and they had balls driving up from Tejas. Met Topdead center, kool guy. Nummnuts and Continetal John are way too kool.

The show was phenomenol. I just can't say enough about it.

I can't wait for next year. Thanks to Abomber30 and Hellfish. You guys really got something here!

PPofC; Thank you so much for the kind words. You are truely a gentleman. I'm thrilled I got the opportunity to not only meet you in person but to actually spend some time getting to know you. Hopefully we can all get together the next time your in Detroit. I would love to introduce you to not only Big Olds but the rest of the Detroit area HAMB guys. The photo of you and I turned out great and so did the group shot. I'll post them in a few minutes.

Wingnutz, (I say with a sarcastic tone in my voice http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) So..... it was my Salt Flat cookies that brought you over to the roadster and not my charming personality, witty sense of humor, or movie starlet good looks??? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm glad you enjoyed your LUNCH of cookies. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif It was wonderful to meet you and your lovely wife. Looking forward to our paths crossing again in the near future.

Damn, I'm kicking myself for not going to that show. Had a busy weekend doing an engine swap at a buddy's house.

Anyone know what the mill is in the coupe in the forground of this picture? Any more info here?

Some bad ass rides up there!

It was good to talk to HAMBers I hadn't met yet, Broman, Top Dead Center, Mr.Gasser, Atch, Hot Rod Josh, Paso John and ones that I already knew, Side Valve, Bob Bleed, Plowboy, Abomber30. Sorry I didn't meet the rest of you. Wearing a HAMB t-shirt sure helped, wish all the HAMBers had one. Max

thanx to everyone who was involved in putting on the pileup. i don't know who is who, so i'll not try to mention names.

to the 20-30 hambers i met, it's good to know ya. to the other 20 or so that were there that i didn't meet, i'll be lookin' for you next year.

i'm sure denise will be able to identify every hamber in the pic at the hotel. if she had 1/10th of her memory and i had 10 times as much as i now have we would have about the same amount. hell, i introduced myself to wingnutz twice 'cause i didn't remember the first time.

bleed, thanx for talkin' tech with me while everyone else was concentrating on partying.

i guess some of you guys partied somewhere before you got back to microtel, 'cause zor & i drove through their parking lot about 9:15 and didn't see one hot rod. or maybe we went to the wrong hotel. anyway we went on to frankfort where we were staying. wish we would have went to supper with you guys so we wouldn't have gotten separated and we could have partied with you. however, we heard the last of the bands play, saw the awesome flame shows, partied with the crowd, and finally called it quits.

i've got to agree with everyone on here who's said this was the best show he/she has been to in a while. this has been probably the best season of hot rod events for me ever. bonneville. hamb drags. the pileup. and a cruise of 125 miles to bennet springs state park (missouri) with about 10 of my best friends (5-6 of them are hambers) about a month ago for a full day barbecue.

i don't remember who (surprised?) it was, but someone at the drags mentioned that at the end of the day he hadn't heard even one time anyone being asked "when you gonna finish it?" or "what color you gonna paint it?" or any other such nonsense. there wasn't any of that stuff here, either. it's nice to be around people who "get it". i've owned clarence over 30 years and have been asked those kinds of questions hundreds of times, maybe thousands. i quit trying to explain it years ago. now i just say it was finished ten years ago.

next year i'll have a room for friday and saturday nights. i'm on the e-mail list for event communications, and i'll be watching for the official date. as soon as the date is set i'll be getting my reservations. is the microtel the hotel of choice for most people?

once again, thanx to everyone who worked to put on this gig, the bands, and all the participants that i met.

I thought I'd mention that there were around 130 REGISTERED cars at the show, but I know many many cars did not register because they were stingy or because we told them not to bother after we ran out of shirts. That total also doesn't count the cars parked in the ditch, along the highway, or across the street. It also doesn't include the dozens of bikes and scooters. I have no idea how many people were there. Anyone want to take a guess? We didn't bother trying to take a count. Thanks again to everyone for coming! Thanks to the Cheaters for not coming (in front of everyone).

Yeah Atch! Where were you??? You coulda driven around town with us trying to find a place to eat that wasn't being overcome with Homecoming Highschoolers! We ended up eating at some place in the old down town...that was WAY too nice for a buncha hotrodders...but they welcomed us with open arms, and we had a great time....I'm not too sure what some of the old people that were there for a semi-elegant dinner thought of us though...oh well http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif You missed a good time - next year, when I invite you to dinner, you better show up!!

The Microtel was the only hotel that gave us a group discount (Thanks to Denise!!!!), so it was the choice by default. Hopefully they'll have us back next year and we can get in early and book ALL the rooms. Plus, they had a computer room so we could post on the HAMB after the show!

But seriously does a HAMBer own that Pontiac? Just curious, I almost bought one of those and was wondering how much he got it for?

The poncho belongs to a non-member, my friend Thor (real name, no shit). He's the PBR posterchild. He built th poncho a few years ago when he was about 16. He got rearended on thursday before the pileup, hence the bid dent in the back seen in other pictures. Dave

Yeah PBR sponsored the show by giving us cool shit to give away/raffle off and 30+ cases of beer to GIVE away. They rock! As a matter of fact, I was talking with the lovely PBR Ladies last night and one of them said "Those Cheaters were disgusting during the raffle!" What the HELL were you knuckleheads doing?!
