Besides a Banjo that is... I have a rear end out of what I think is a Tri 5 Chevy (worth rebuilding & using?), or is there a good cheaper alternative? I know a lot of you guys use S-10 rear ends... basically Whats a good cheap option that won't need to be shortened and has a 5 lug 5 1/2" patern?

Thanks guys...

If you want a 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern I'd look for a 9" out of an early bronco. Sould be about the right width. I'm using a 9" out of an '86 ford van narrowed 11".

Im using a rearend out of a 55. The axle bearings are a little pricey if you are going to rebuild it.

Yea, I've heard the Broncos are a pretty good bet too...

I've used rear ends from a granada--early to mid 70s with 5 hole pattern. fits great.

71 ish ford pick-up. 9"rear, 60" axle flange to axle flange. 5 1/2 bolt pattern. 11 inch brakes

Works good in my 31 C-Dan

The early Bronco (66 to about 73 or so) is the most narrow 9 inch Ford with the 5 on 5.5 wheel pattern. They are 58 inches wide. That's axle shaft flange to axle shaft flange.

Two versions were made.

1) 2700 lbs axle.......standard Ford axle bearings and 10 inch dia brakes (2 and 1/2 wide)

2) 3200 lbs axle .....larger Ford pickup axle bearings and a 11 X 2 brake drum (like the F100)

If you are running fenders..........a Maverick 8 inch rear is only 56 inches wide....but has the standard Ford wheel pattern of 5 on 4.5 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have a Bronco under my 32 Ford. The Bronco is off-set (center chunk) slightly to the right. It was a 4x4 rear end you know http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Am using a 1960 Ford Galaxy 9" rear on my 30 Roadster[if a car is low it needs a wider rear to clear the tires and quarters up high]61-1/2"

Like Deuce Roadster said, the early Bronco 9" fit nice without any cutting.
I'm running one out of a '76 Bronco with the big brakes in my '33 PU.
I love being able to change gear ratios in less than an hour.

Suppose a dude was to want a Mopar 8 and 3/4 rear axle...what would be a good donor vehicle to source one from to fit a Model A...Dart/Demon/Duster??

Yeah, look in the darts and dusters. Most of them have 8 1/4 rears but you may get lucky and find the 8 3/4. They're stronger than a stock 9" and are super easy to rebuild. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I am running a 57 Chevy rearend amd I love it. Fit perfect looks old school and cruises 80-90 down the highway. Used wheel adapters to run my big bolt pattern Ford Rims.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Mustang 8". My A, with a flathead, hooked to a C4, works well with the 8".

i got this little gem from low springs... only problem is it doesnt tell you lug pattern. however, make a cardboard template of your rim and try it out on possible candidates.

after reading this, i may go back to a 9inch instead of a tri 5 rear, if i can find one.

I'm running a Ford Ranger 7.5" axle.

Not my first choice but they are cheap and plentyful.

My first choice would be an early 9" out of any big Ford. 57" wide but the wrong pattern (5x4½"). Another great choice owuld be the mustang 28 spline 8.8" rear-end or the 31 spline Explorer 8.8". Look around and you can even find one with disk brakes.

the 8" rear should be fairley easy to come by, has a traditional look but also usually has the small Ford bolt pattern.
