went to a junkyard in RI today &saw a pice of turf equippment with a(V-8) flattie in it & it had the letter"A" on the heads in the center.Anyone know whats its out of or the size?

Can't tell too much from the head marks. Ford even used the same basic numbers for all 3 series they made [6049/6050]. About the only way to tell what you found is to count the head studs. 17 = V860 21 = '32-'38 24 = '38-'48 24 bolts = '49-'53 (exceptions are trucks and Canada production)

If I were to guess on the 'A' I'd say the '38-'48 series

Same engines were used in cars and trucks - generally.

I went thru a lengthy exercise when I was researching my 43 1/2 ton and as best as I can find out that casting ID was introduced in 1941. I have also seen it on a real early 46 model produced in 45 that had a 221 inch engine instead of a 239.

Best guess with any Ford is throw up a coin and call it.
