Dick, I'll check I may have a 3 spd tranny. The bellhousing and flywheel I may have also but they're stock.

Rocky,, I got a fully syncro 3sp. coming from a friend of mine in Kansas..What I really need is to find a suitable flywheel..I will chuck it up on the lathe and cut it down. Then have it surface ground anyway, So it doesn't need to be perfect..As far as the Bellhousing.. That would be cool...BTW. Are dual disc clutches legal.???
mudflap261
05-25-2008, 12:03 PM
the rules do not address that . but iam sure the bug did not have one my personal opinion is it should be single disc lock up clucth ,of high quality.or soon some will want to usea slider am I wrong
348chevy
05-25-2008, 05:23 PM
Well I had a slider and didn't want one. It certainly was not an advantage. I think a normal clutch should be standard. Because the friction surface is above the rest of my flywheel I thought I needed to shim the clutch up to that level. Not so it slipped badly. Maybe with some exotic surface it might have been alright but with an organic surface it just smoked. I think we can over engineer these things. The Bug was probably a 3/8 by 3/8 flathead [296cu.in.] and probably running on 25% nitro and 75% Menthol. Most everyone in the early days of racing ran some type of fuel. It's just like today everyone runs nitros oxide, easy way to get extra horsepower. Back to the clutch, would going to a slipper clutch really help with these cars? I doubt that it would be any advantage because we just don't have enough horsepower. I think slippers are only an advantage when you are looking for traction and high gear only. If you are shifting gears it doesn't look to me that would help. It is just my opinion and everyone has one.:confused:Roy

I think Dick is pulling our chain:D, but I do agree with 348'. I'll check on the flywheel and bellhousing and let you know Dick.

05-26-2008, 07:09 AM
The race isn't until the 30th which is next friday. The clutch releases now but I don't know if it will slip. My problem is I don't have a testing area around the house. I would have to load it on the trailer and haul it to a lonely road somewhere and unload it to test it. The clutch is a 10 1/2 in. diaphram with an organic disk nothing complicated about it. I have plenty of room with the linkage, I just don't know what the problem can be. Maybe it is solved now, won't know until friday. The problem is with the formed bellhousing there is no getting into the clutch without taking the transmission out and bellhousing off. :(Roy

05-26-2008, 09:22 AM
348,, Cant you cut a rectangular inspection hole in the can,?? Then make a cover for it.. Like we have in the Ti Cans. Then Hold the cover down with 6 bolts..Or is it a standard style bell housing..???
Old6rodder
05-26-2008, 02:42 PM
My thought as well.
Most "formed" bells are full circle, are they not?
Perhaps an access on the bottom (rather like a stock bell) so it couldn't compromise the scatter pattern except toward the asphalt even if the cover did let go?
348chevy
05-26-2008, 07:21 PM
The Bellhousing is 360 degrees with the only hole being where the clutch actuating arm goes in to push the throwout bearing. I have tried to look through that but it doesn't give me enough room to slip a feeler gauge in so I can see how much it is releasing. I suppose that I could cut a hole in the bottom but I want to think long and hard on that one. It might ruin the integrity of the bellhousing. Anyway, we'll find out Friday night if I can spin a tire instead of having smoke come out of the clutch housing. There should be a way of setting up a clutch so you would know it was right. Like when you tighten down the cover what height should the fingers be from the surface of the disk? I know there is an answer just need someone who knows clutches to chime in here.:(Roy

Got to plumb the back brakes next, Gonna use a 10 lb residule valve.. Got the 18" spokes mounted on the front now also.. Slowly but surely its coming along..

Quick Question:: Do most of you run spools or open rearends, or mini spool...I have mine gutted, And was thinking what to do for it.....
Joe Hamby
06-09-2008, 09:41 PM
I run a ratchet type of posi, because if I get sidewise I have a better chance of coming out of it safely. With a spool you could be in deep trouble. Joe
I run a poor mans posi.
Four pounds less air in the right tire and a ridgid mounted rear, if it spins, it spins both tires through first and second.

As we all know wishful thinking sometimes turns into reality and we get what we wish for. That's what happened to my GMC. The better part of common sense went out the door and a GMC Frankenstein (sp) was created. Once committed there is no turning back. If (?????) the damn thing holds together it should be a pretty serious piece, and my partners and I will be able to make a decent showing at the strip. It's almost a clone to the engine Mike Kirby was running in his altered roadster. If it makes 75 percent of the power he was making I'll be tickled pink.
Without a doubt having him as a consultant will reap rewards.

Hell...I don't even know if it will work or not. But as they use to do 60 yrs ago, Try something.. This is basically a stock 194 intake manifold.. That I cleaned up a bit with a sanding disc and bored out the single one barrel plentum, Put a radius on the edges, Built the top piece out of a piece of 2" by 4" rectangular aluminum tubing. Tapered both ends down and welded in pieces.. You notice it still uses the original 2 bolt holes off the manifold to hold the top piece on..Gonna use 2 Stromberg 97s..It might not work, But the stock one did.. Just addea a couple of carbs....Thanks Dick for posting these for me..Still haven't figured out this computer yet....Dick...

But if you kinda squint reel hard like.:D
I've got a Cannon 8 MP camera, if you don't have a slot for the memory card in your computer you should be able to hook the camera to your computer with the patch cable (should have come with it).
I usually use the 'camera and scanner wizzard' that comes with windows, if you have a Mac, you're on your own.
To get the camera to give up it's pics start with it turned off and your computer up & running. Plug the patch cable in (that goofy mini USB @ the camera, under the cover on the kung fu grip end of the camera IIRC, it's labled, the other to any USB port on your computer) then turn your camera on. It should auto detect (in Windows).
Step through the wizzard, save it with a name you can remember (I put mine in the 'my pictures' folder, orriginal I know, but I kept forgeting where I put them when I put them elsewhwere :o).

I'm not that smart, just been around it a while.
For What it's Worth, USB='Universal Serial Bus' it was supposed to be a plan to have a single kind of plug to be able to hook anything extra or portable up to any computer, because it would be the same, same size, same shape, the software would all speak the same language. Ahh utopia.
Well as you can guess that didn't work for crap.
Getting harware designers to all go one direction is about the same as racers, ie herding cats.
I've got a 'USB adapter cable' it has 7 completly different pugs on it so you can hook it to the most common ones (where's the smack my forehead and sigh smiley??).
The biggest benefit I have on any of that is, it's mostly automatic. 90%+ of the time if you hook it up as I described it will find itself and run where you need it to.
It has the 'wizzard' to prompt you where to go and what to do. If it asks you 'ARE YOU SURE?' the answer is 'NO'. Other than that I have never had a problem with it.
Oh, if it asks you if you want to 'FORMAT' any thing, 'HELL NO'! (where's the link to the redneck keyboard with that key?)

Hey Thingy, how many gears do you plan to use? If it is only a couple of gears then just put yourself a couple of pull levers and attach them to the floorboards instead of the tailshaft. That is how I did my shifter and it worked great. I used the same setup on my old chevy powered slingshot. :) Roy

Hi Thingy. I had the very same thing a couple of years ago. I simply built a box type of thing out to the left side, I lined up the shifter so that it was straight in line with the shift arms on the tranny, I made shift linkage arms that are straight and a lot shorter, then built my own shift handle. It is an old hurst shifter on a four speed, I shift it left handed, that way my left shoulder is lined up fairly straight, ergonomicly correct, even if the spelling is not. Joe

I know you guys aren't going to believe this. But I was looking at doing exactly what Hamby said he did. I took some dimensions and scribbled them out on a sheet of paper. Looks like it will work.. I have a Hurst shifter also.. Thanks for all the offers and help.. Very much appreciated..Some times frustration takes over, and the thinking side of your brain takes a nap...Dick M

Been there.......done that.:D
That's the advantage we have here, a great support staff of other builders who have had similar problems to help us get our brains re-booted when we go into an engineering crash.:p
Sometimes the solution is right there, we just need to have it illuminated.

Well I cut the krinkled up section of the pan out. Where all the bumps and bruises to clear the stock crossmember are, And formed up a new section, And started to weld it in. Will finish it today. It looks like it will add at least a couple of Quarts to the pan volume, And look much cleaner..Things are starting to happen now..Like Rocky says.. Now I got a deadline to meet..Yes I got pictures. Well I got my water pump set up all figured out and partially built.. Im using the standard Chev.6 pump. but am driving it with a Ford heater motor at about 20 to 1 ratio..Just enough to keep the water flowing slowly enough to let the radiator cool the water. Plan is to run the motor around 180 degrees..I'm machining my own pulleys for the pump and motor..After this, I'm going to start building my drive shaft...
Dick,
If that heater motor proves to not have enough power, Jegs sells a 1500 rpm motor for driving a water pump. It is expensive by my standarda at $56.99.

Thanks Bob.. I did a little testing on about 5 different motors. This one I got is a real hunker. When I hooked it up to a battery, The darn thing just about jumped out of my hand. It is 3" in dia. and spins at about 1500 rpm..We'll find out...Dick M

03-15-2009, 01:46 AM
I looked it up in the catalog.. Looks just like the one I have. Just saved me $57.00. plus I have one more for a spare...And these 2 were FREE...
Do you know what the motors came out of? I'm going to the junkyard Tuesday on a carb collecting mission. Wouldn't mind grabbing a couple of those husky heater motors too.
ThingyM
03-15-2009, 09:13 AM
Bob.. I'm not really sure , But they are Motorcraft. With a squirel cage type fan of about 6" in dia,. The actual mounting plate is about maybe 10" in dia. I had to chuck it up in the lathe and cut the large dia mount off, Left about 1/2" ring around it to mount it on a bracket..Hope this helps..Dick M
BTW.. If you want, I'll check tomarrow, And see if I can find any markings or numbers on them that might help...

Way to go, Dick! Another milestone reached. And your first race will be just like the old days (Eagle Field). That is so cool.

Thanks Guys... We did some more work on it today, Usual leaks etc. fixed. Fired it up and let it run on fast idle, To break in the cam and rings. I put a large fan in front of the car..It never got over 185 degrees.. Bob, That motor driven water pump worked+...Can't work on it tomarrow, But I sure will be on Monday

Congratulations Dick!! Looking forward to seeing it all together. You got yours done before ours ever had a chance to leak fluids.:D
Hope to have ours ready for next year. Just need to get my ass in gear and make some progress.
