I swapped out the B&M and stabbed in a Hughes today and now I have this busted trans just sitting here.

well it can't be too busted is still works, just clunks and slips a little http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

anyway, how hard is it to go through one of these things?

or should I farm the task out or just toss it?

Kinda depends on you. Do you want to do it your self? Or pay someone? Paying someone would run about $400+ I'd guess. Doing it your self would be a lot cheaper and you'd learn a bunch about how these things work.
At any rate if you want to do it your self PM shifts or call him (dave) ( www.midtowntransmission.com (http://www.midtowntransmission.com) ) and he'll get you whatever you need to rebuild the tranny.

Don't get rid of it. The T400 is one of the tuffest transmissions going. In fact I'm surprised that you've had trouble with one that was performance built, they usually last well over 100,000 miles. I've got one with over 300,000 on it but it was an early one, before they started to put the less durable parts in.

yeah I'm surprised it went bad so soon too.
it's only three years old and has only a couple thousand miles on it tops..
I hammered on it a few times
(like every time I had it out http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif )
but never raced it and always had the fluid level right on
and a cooler hooked up to it too.
oh well..

I dropped the pan and there was about a half teaspoon of bronze powder and a few shavings at the bottom but no big chunks http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'll shove it under the bench for now.. I geuss
prolly need to tear it down before I go out and buy a kit huh?

I've been rebuilding for almost 20 years, and one thing I can say is that the thm400 is getting very rare. Do not get rid of it! The last one I bought for a friend cost me $250.00, less then ten years ago I could buy them for $25.00.
Rebuild it
There are very cheep to overhaul.
If you want help, I'll walk you through it.

Gridley,
That would be great tech material. What special tools does a guy need?

60's Style, We make a step by step video if you wanna rebuild it yourself. I loan them out to HAMBers on the honor system. I also have anything you need as far as parts are concerned. Dont be afraid to do it yourself, you can train monkeys to do one of these. DAVE

thanks Dave,

I'll get in touch when get to it.

I'll shove it under the bench for now but

maybe one day the Stude will get some Chevy motorvation

and it'll need a transmission.

If my buddies and I can rebuild a Torqueflite, you can surely tackle a TH400...

Good luck.
