Newbie Bashing

I've only been on the Hamb for a couple of months. I guess that still makes me a newbie. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif One of the things that I have observed on several occasions is the unnecessary sodimy of a new member who posts something too early in his life on the Hamb. My purpose is not to antagonize the long time members, but to inform them that not all Hambones share in the strict, but unwritten regulations of this bulletin board. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The general thought is that everyone lurks for awhile before joining. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif But not all do. I didn’t. I heard about it from Fuel Pump when I bought his car and just joined. I think a lot of people do that. And if you join in this way, you have no knowledge of any pre requirements of the number of posts before trying to sell, or post off topic stuff. You see off topic stuff all over the place and don’t think to look at the number of posts the guy has made who posted them.

Some Hambones are members of several other boards and just learning about building cars. They probably are aware of the unwritten message board rules. Some Hambones are long time car guys with little or no message board experience. I would like to think I have plenty to offer to the Hamb. I guess I was just lucky. If someone had bashed me in my first few posts, that would have ended it. I would have deleted the link on my computer and never looked back. I’m way to old to try out for the team. The HAMB is an unbelievable resource for the hobby. I would hate to see us lose good members because they don’t follow rules that they are unaware of and are not posted anywhere.

I think the point I’m trying to make is that we beat people up for breaking rules they don’t even know exist. We pin all the auctions up, why cant we pin up some basic Hamb etiquette. Ryan?

i think the HAMB is fine the way it is. granted, the shit talking gets gay after awhile, its common for me to just overlook intros and O/T to avoid adding to the mess of bullshit that can sometimes arise.

Can't speak for the mini truck guys but I drive and work on VW's and I haven't really seen this mentality. And if anyone does they need to be hit in the head with a tack hammer because while VW's are fun cars IMO they are not hot rods by any use of the word.

I don't recall getting a whole ration in the beginning. But I'm pretty thick skinned and probably wouldn't have noticed.I always run with a pretty rough bunch when I was younger and just figure it goes with the territory.

On the other hand there reaches a point when it is no longer ribbing and I'm probably as guilty as anyone.

I think that there must to be some way to let people know what is and isn't acceptable on the board. I don't think written rules are the answer. Some of us are just more tactful about letting it be known than others.

I do agree that we have lost a few that may have had something to contribute. On the otherhand, we have no way of knowing because they never let anyone know anything about themselves.

Maybe its like this, suppose I walked into Yosemite Machine and just went over to the valve grinding machine and started useing it. Now I've been grinding valves since I was a little guy, probably well before anyone knew anything about Yosemite machine.

They'd probably do way more than be rude. On the otherhand if I spent some time getting to know them and they knew me they might not get too upset if I wanted to use their equipment to cut my seats and grind my valves.

Its all about protocall, we are up against it everyday in everything we do.

We could use a little less drama I suppose. But after you get to know these guys (spell that me) they aren't such a bad bunch. I don't think I'd change a single one of 'em.

That's true, my husband posted once a few years back, (2 or 3, I don't remember), about a car he was thinking of getting, (a four door) and was given the usual newbie shit, plus much more for the car he was talking about being a four door. He's still a lurker, (mostly because he works a lot though, he was actually teary eyed reading about the people offerning to help us out and raising money for my car to be chopped. So if you are in any doubt about the people on this board, I can send you the links to some very nice posts that show some serious kindness by the memebers of this board!).

This is surely a more mellow place today. And most people get good replies as long as they post a decent intro and don't talk about 4-bys and imoprts.

Heah guy's it's me, the guy that posted the OT way to soon. I got bashed and set straight. It's part of life we have a bunch strong personalities (me being one as you will learned.) and people butt heads. It didn't bother one bit, I fucked up and got bitched at, I bitched back and now things are cool. I do however see where some meeker types can get hurt, and that's life, not everyone gets along all of the time. It's not anyones place to tell someone else that their reactions are wrong. When I was in art school, the first semester they constantly put us down, and criticized our work, even though we had worked on a project for the last 52 hours straight. A lot of people didn't make it (about 50% gone by Fall Break, another 50% of those left were gone by Christmas), but the students that were serious stuck in it. I'm glad I didn't have to share the advanced classes with a bunch of people that didn't care deeply enough about being there to learn.

I think it's safe to say we've let a few in thru the cracks.

I've got nothing against newbies, but at the same time, I don't want to come on here to help them pick out a boss stereo for their PT Cruiser or argue over who makes the best 22" Dubs for their Yukon. And I sure don't want to buy their nifty new billet bullshit or whatever else they're trying to make a buck on. This place is like a club and like any club, it has it's own agenda. We're not here to support the aftermarket. We don't care how fast your ricer is or how many OCC and WCC stickers you have on your minitruck. We're here because we like old school hot rods and customs and we like building our own using what we have or can scrounge up. Most of us are lost in the 50's or 60's and like it that way. We also like to know a little about who we're talking to. You don't have to have all the skills to join, hell, you don't even have to have a car. But you do have to have an interest in what we're about. Newbies who can live with that will find this a great place. Those who can't will get their asses kicked back out the door they came in. And that's fine with me.

Hey I agree with you. I joined in january and almost never used this board for that reason as I saw people get burned.
However being friends with a few local hambers has shown me a totaly different h.a.m.b. than what I thought it was about. The h.a.m.b. is a great source for the hobby and I also have lots to contribute.

When I go to a car show, I talk to owners of cars that I like when I get the chance. Y'know, just basic "car guy" questions & compliments. I don't walk up to a guy & say "Hi, my name is _______ & I grew up around hot rods & I've built XX amount of cars & I live in Bumfuck, Egypt & my favorite color is ______". And I have never been "bashed" yet by a guy because I didn't give a proper intro before I just walked up & said something to him. Same thing at a bar- I don't give people my fucking life story before I say something to them. I don't have a problem with newbies getting flamed. If you're brave or dumb enough to inflict some rival prodding, deal. On the other hand, initiation or not, regs should be prepared to encounter newbies that bite back and excercise willingness to realize this is a message board, not a bar and that flames thrown back are not a challenge to tell someone "I'm gonna kick your ass" or any of the other shit I've seen in my short tenure here. Regs should check their skin thickness too.

Your post just sounded like whining, and your comment about you're too old, etc., combined with your Bio, led me to believe that you think you're above the way the board has operated since it's inception, and you have a better way for it to operate.

I read the info people put in their Bio so I have an idea of who they are when I talk to them. Most don't even put their name in it, or where they're from. They're usually the ones who want to change everything.

Since it's not my board, and I'm a guest, I would make suggestions for change to the OWNER by PM, not a general post, to avoid wasting bandwidth. However, if you would want to be seen as an organizer, stir the pot. You've been here long enough to know how the board works.

you have got to love this newbie bashing debate as it arises often. as i read these posts, "don"t be so harsh", "give these new guys hell"," its like an initiation, they can take it", etc. etc., a bigger question comes to mind---just who are all of these more seasoned hambers talking all of the shit?? i started checking bios and came across something interesting. for a bulletin board dedicated to TRADITIONAL HOT RODS AND CUSTOMS, many of these hamb hotshots have neither. now mind you, just as many hambers do indeed have ACTUAL hot rods and customs worth their weight (and you know who you are).stock farm trucks with " leftys hot rod emporium" faux painted on the side are not hot rods. four door stock grandma cars are not customs. now correct me if things have changed lately in the world of hot rods and customs, but four door cars are not cool, never have been and never will be ( the only exception being phaetons and the like). a 30 dodge sedan welded to a 36 ford truck, grafted to a 33 chevy coupe roof, over channeled, underpainted, to tall wheeled, with a liberal dose of iron cross bullshit is not a traditional hot rod. (a perfect candidate for old skool rods though). the point here is that a good chunk of these guys dont even have a car and those that do are just plain weak--READ WEAK!! although this board is a great idea, it seems like it has strayed from its original intention --exchanging info and tech about TRADITIONAL HOT RODS AND CUSTOMS. it seems to be diluted with, " build anything old bro, it will be cool and we will dig it". the funny thing is that when someone new posts his "hot rod" and it is glaringly obvious that it is not anywhere near being a traditional rod or custom, i am amazed at the " nice car man, welcome" responses. what to do about this dilemma?? who knows, maybe ryan should set up a division of hamb for stock old cars and trucks that are nowhere near ever being hot rods or customs.remember, there is nothing wrong with owning these cars, just don't claim they are hot rods and customs when they are not. i would expect a bit of response from this--from both sides i would hope. one last thing, when the angry responses come, take a peek at what they own/drive, might be interesting.
