Electrical question..Fuses!

I'm wiring my car myself and had planned to run fuses with the wires to the lights on my SW guages. I had 5 amp fuses in line to the lights; from the headlight switch to the guarge lights.
Is this necessary?
Can I just run them off of the light switch without fuses?

A fuse can't hurt.

The way I did my gauge lights was to wire them right off the switch, but the power to the switch is fused, so the circuit is covered in case of a short or something.

If you fuse the power supply to the switch, additional fusing to the individual gauge lights won't be neccessary, but can't hurt anything, either.
