I looked through all my stuff to no avail.
I did find that there were more 46 and 47 cars made than 48.
On Carnut.com there is a listing for car specs.
there were nearly twice as many cars sold in each of the years, 46 and 47 as there were 19+8 cars, afound 247,000.
armed with that knowledge and $2,00. you can get coffee in any restaurant in Joplin,Mo. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's up front on the left frame rail, on top near the engine support crossmember. Has a * at either side of the number.

can be anyplace between firewall and front cross member. But it's generaly between steering box and crossmember, nearer to the crossmember. You might have to do some scrapping and wirebrushing sometimes even a little chalk rubbed on it will help make the #'s clearer.

Ok
And if it's been sub-framed with a 69 camaro clip??
I may lose out on selling it because I can't prove numbers http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I'm working on something.
Thanks everyone

You did'nt hear it from me but I was in a similar situation & I stamped the numbers into a brass dash plaque drilled it & popriveted it to the firewall where the original patent plate was & brushed on a few coats of black enamel to the firewall, so it looks like it been there awhile.
With a few dash plques, a number punch set, an X and a modified L punch, you'll be making convincing serial # tags in no time.

Actually, I had a similar talk with the potential buyer.
I'm gonna try to get a metal tag, and punch it at work.

Thanks

I told you the #s are stamped in 2 places one is front drivers side rail behind the crossmember , the other is same side (i think ) tward the rea end where the kick up is on the frame rail . more than likely the front is gone , but the rear # s should still remain .I do think its on the top of the fame on the rear so you may have to pull the body .

From 1932 through 1948 vehicles, Ford Motor Company stamped the serial number into the top of the driver's side frame rail in three locations. This same number was also stamped into the top of the transmission-to-engine housing portion of the transmission. This location was visible when the floorboard and transmission cover plate were removed (click here for a picture example). Of the frame-stamped serial numbers, only the forward-most stamping was visible when looking down into the engine compartment (located between the front crossmember and the dash (firewall). The two other frame locations are visible only when the body is removed from the frame. The serial numbers were metal stamped with numbers/letters approximately 1/4" in height. The number (including the prefixes shown) was always preceded by (and followed by) a stamped "star" similar to an asterisk. It is believed that this was done to prevent someone from fraudulently adding a digit to the beginning or ending of a serial number in order to alter its identification. The "font" of the stamp had an unusual looking number "6" which looked more like an upside down "9" (the vertical stroke of the number was quite straight, not curved).

On 1949 and 1950 cars the number was stamped on the dash panel (firewall) under the hood. In 1951 the number was stamped in a plate which was mounted on the dash panel (firewall) under the hood. For early 1952 models the number was on a plate mounted on the right front door pillar post. The late '52 and the '53 models had the number on a plate on the left front door pillar post.

What about a 2nd vin locaiton on a 52 ford f-1? anyone? Arizona does a out of state inspection and they look up two vin locations. I have the glove box vin but cannot find a second one. I do not think they stamped the frame on 52 ?

More...the engine number (stamped on trans bell) was the original number, stamped at the Rouge plant as soon as engine unit passed inspection. This number was copied onto frame at the time the engine met the chassis on the assembly line. The full number will have additional prefix for passenger car and year added to the basic 99 (239 V8) number...*899A-xxxxx* I think. Extra frame numbers just have the sequential number part.
Your patent plate has a tiny box with abbreviation of assembly plant usually stamped in it.
Allegedly, some late 1948's got a bigger firewall plate with serial number stamped thereon, but I have never encountered such.
Early Ford numbers are strictly engine/chassis number. If you have only the body, you have no number, and as far as Ford considered it, no car!
