Terrible sound from the engine-comp. turned out to be the waterpump . Went to our local US-car parts store , and they had a hard time finding the right one. Could one of you Nailhead "freaks" school me ? Do `63-`65 Rivieras have a special pump , .. OR is there other pumps that might fit ?? found & Bought one , but the outlet for the heater-hose is in the wrong place ( points down instead of Up ), and the size of the mounting bolts are different.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Most part#s` we found said : fits-this-and-that-But NOT RIVIERA . Any help would be highly appreciated http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif BTW ... My car has a Stock `63 401

I don't think it's any different than any other 401 water pump.

Sounds like they gave you the wrong part or something. When I replaced the water pump on my 65 I don't remember it being Riviera specific.

But then, maybe my memory is failing me.

I pulled the pump out of my `64 Riv Parts-car. Will post a pic tomorrow . ( I`m off to work ) Maybe the pic will tell if it`s a "Freak" or not .. Thanx http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'll go look but it sounds like the pump for an older nailhead or completely different engine. The 401 and 425's all took the same pump casing.

the 63-65 water pumps are specific for 401-425 family.early pumps wont work.the main diff with in those years is the impeller blades 3 blades for non a/c,5 blades for ac equiped cars.i've been able to get them through NAPA or car quest.new even.
I wanna say about $75 to $100
hope that helps

Thanx for helping out http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Enclosed 3 pix. The first 2 is the one I`m tryin`to locate . The last pic is the one I found at the parts-store. Looks close , but it is probably from a 215 Alu-engine or something ?? Well , If any of you recognize the pump in the 2 first pix , I would appreciate if you could give me the years/Models that looks simmilar .
THANX http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The new one doesn't look right. I just went and looked at my 60's 401 waterpump and it's shaped like the old crusty one.

Rock Auto's web site offers a new (not remanufactured) Airtex #AW770 at $53.89.
I'm pretty sure that's the A/C pump. From Discussions on the Nailhead list you really want the Non A/C water Pump.

What's the deal with a/c versus non-a/c pumps anyway?

Again, THANX for your help. Found a NOS pump at a us-car parts dealer in OSLO today. Much easier to find when I had your info at hand http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ( BTW .. The pump I found earlier ( pic 3 ) Turned out to be for a V6 ) ..

why do we want the non a/c pump? i'd think that we would want to use the 5 impeller pump for everything.

You would think so.
I haven't been able to test this yet, but my guess is the five blade pump cavitates and ends up not moving as much water at highway speeds.
Once I get the Hearse running I'll run some tests and post the results with temperatures.
