hey, thanks. I liberated a set of Caddy sombreros from a local doomed wrecking yard before it got plowed under so I may set it up with those.
my '55 has seen over 100,000 miles since I bought her and has been all over the country, has had only a valve job and is essentially stock. up 'til '91 or so it even had a lot of original paint. I love that car. I'll be a very old man when I finally give her up.

The engine is so dirty that I couldn't see any numbers...
but maybe I'm looking in the wrong area as well...
the rad part is, that it was under a hood forever, and it still spins freely...
Maybe with just a 'freshen up' it could be a runner..!!

Snacky, your actually questioning Yogi?!!
Yeah, looks right to me, at least that's what the valve covers are saying, looks pretty stock as well. Dunno, don't have my xray glasses on though.
Although, we would need numbers to identify it in all certainty. Pretty much all of the '49-56 olds's looked alike upon visual inspection. Just little changes here and there, like valve covers, generator placement, intakes, you know.
Mr.Don Wow, you make me feel better about my self, makes me feel like not as much of a "parts whore"! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hee, hee, hee. Nice pics. I got a bunch of pics too. Unless Erdy beats me to posting them, I'll post them. But I just sent him all my pics, so I know he's got 'em on disc too...
I'm about 3 months away from having my engine mocked up with the new Littlefield blower, but that'll be too late for this thread http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Hotrodladycruiser! That's only the third time I have ever seen those valve covers for the late Olds! I have one pair, and the other pair was on a boat engine locally (and not for sale either). One of mine is no name with a breather like the one shown, the other has the cursive Edelbrock script in the center, but otherwise identical. I believe these were Edelbrock's first production run, as they later had two other versions that didn't look the same. If you have mismatched covers like I just described, Id be interested in attempting a trade with you to get us both a matching pair...
And DANG IT, I thought CGKid sold all his 394 stuff??????? I am looking for some finned no-name valve covers for the 394, and if those ones on the motor are the ones that have the gasket retaining lip on the bottom, I'll make it worth his while!! I need some nice ones with no breathers or holes.

Oh yeah----- Snacky-- there might be a big one or two-digit number cast on top of the exhaust port area of the heads. Also there will be a serial number stamped on a pad on the top of the block deck on the left side under the head. What are those numbers, and we'll tell you what year it is.
As for the TH400 conversion, Tanson's Ent. (1-800-FAST-88S) has them, as well as Dave Smith in Exeter, CA and one other source whom I've forgotten. If you don't want to run an old school hydro, and you don't want a stick, and you don't want a bone-stock original trans, and are looking for performance/durability, etc., then these conversions are the way to go. But for those of use that want hydro's and sticks... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

heres a spare rocket I picked up about a year ago. I bought this setup from a hot rodder who had it a long time under his bench. He gave me some header plates he made in high school shop class.........he is about 50 years old now. He got the motor from an old timer in the late 60's. Motor has Isky rocker arms and some wierd mallory distributer with a coil box no one can figure out. It is suppose to be rebuilt but I have not pulled it apart yet. Notice the LaSalle trans with the Mystery shifter. Any of you rocketeers run a old caddy trans? I hear they are tough. This trans is suppose to be fresh inside too with new Brass somethings? inside. All those guys with sbc and olds valve covers don't know what they are missing! Long live the rockets! Steve

Hey Mecutem, the local napa guy said he built up his '56 rocket motor that he had in his old '49 2dr sedan, about 40-50 someodd years ago, he said he went through about 3 tranys before his put a LaSalle behind it, said that's the trany that was still in it when he sold it many years later. I would kill for that setup, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif , no really... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How to tell an Olds engine from a SBC? No problemo at all for a true Rocketeer.
If you are talking about the SBC's that have the Olds valve cover trick, I tend to look for the angle of the valve cover, the Olds ones lay over more and SBC's are a little more upright. Also the center exhausts can be a clue, though not necessarily (some Olds heads are split on the center two)

Thanks. I knew that Olds engines had three exhaust ports per side, but had seen ones with headers that had four pipes (siamesed middle pipes), so I wasn't sure if that was a solid clue. Thanks for the tip regarding the angle of the cover.

mecutem: That's an early 1960's era Mallory Mini-Mag Magneto It was a brand new item for Mallory in 1961 or early 1962 (I think that's about the correct year).
Here's what a 60's era speed catalog ad said about the magneto and the power pack:
MAGNETO ASSEMBLY: Developed by the Scintilla Division of the Bendix Corporation, The Mini-Mag Magneto has a series of primary coils for boosting the generator power to the transformer coil which is located outside the magneto housing. Low voltage and current within the magneto housing reduces electrical stresses common in other magnetos, eliminating the possibility of short circuits and insuring proper insulation in both magneto housing and distributor cap. Powerful permanent Alnico rotating magnet assures extra hot spark....cool performance. Rotates on ball bearings for greater dependability. Hi-speed contact points last indefinitely. Easily adjusted (check point clearance only)
Power-Pak: Converts magneto to full battery ignition during starting...provides a powerful spark to start engines regardless of weather conditions. Easily installed...eliminates the need for special vibrators or impulse devices. For push-start engines, a coil and on-off switch are supplied (Drag-Pak) instead of the Power-Pak.
In one catalog I have your unit (Mag and Power-Pak listed for $165.00, $5.00 more than a Vertex magneto (Ronco version). In a 1962 Almquist catalog they listed it at $125.00
The Almquist catalog listed Three separate 8 carb U-Fab manifold kits for the 49-53, 54-56, and 59-60 Olds engines. The only cast alum. 8 carb manifolds they had were for Hemis (51-58) and the Merc 383, and Merc, Lincoln, T-Bird 401, and the Edsel 401 (and they were log type manifolds too, made by Weiand: The Drag Star model).

Did I win?
That's a wierd set-up. I don't recall ever seeing two different engines paired together like that. Do you know the advantage of that? Seems that it would be easier to keep track of parts, tuning, etc if the engines were the same.
Thanks for the lesson. I might have actually learned something today! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So did you find this car and are rebuilding it? Or did you build this car originally? I'd love to come take some pictures of it, and just plain see it in person!
What's done to the engine?! Any current full body shots? And yeah, better watch out for that shifter man! Ooohh... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
That's a good one Nate! If it where me I'd say the front one was the olds and the back the chevy. Look at how close the center exhaust ports are on that front engine compaired to the back. But knowing my luck, I'm wrong! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Am I right in thinking that the motor out of a `57 Olds Super 88 is a desirable lump.I ask `cause a friend of mine took the motor out of his `57 and fitted a 440 Chrysler,The Olds was a smoker and the 440 was there with trans.I asked him where the Olds motor was and he said that Fred had said he`d take it away for him!!I heard somewhere that they were a one year only production is that right??

It's desireable if'n you're a Rocketeer http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Sounds like you have some traditional rodding material there! Go get it.
The low-deck 371 was made two years, '57-8. There are a couple very minor differences, but consider '57 and '58 371's the same engines.

Oh yeah-- Peter, I was just thinking about a Rocketeer-specific site and forum the other day. I wouldn't have the first clue how to set one up though. But there are lots of guys around that aren't even on the HAMB, just floating around on the 'net here and there. I think there would be enough traffic to make a specific site worth a regular stop...
OK, another pic is at this link. Due to copyright laws, I will just do the link. This may have been Ronnie Nune's last pass with the record-setting Olds engine in his B/GS Willys before he switched to another engine. Too bad you can't see the engine, but it's a great shot of an Olds-powered gasser in action...

Looks to me he was able to get a nice electronic distributor out of it, plus it also looks like he stuffed the engine back into the firewall. I think what he's using is a combination drive box that goes between the fuel pump and the timing cover. I wonder who makes that?
Just curious. I'm personally going to go see Dave's Small-body HEI's this week hopefully to do a Vertex conversion. I know a guy with a Dave's-converted Vertex and it fires his blown motor up like right now. Got the MSD boost timing master box that goes to it at a male terminal in the top.
Man, I hope to have a photo of my mocked-up engine for you guys before this thread gets locked up or something. I'll post some more great photos later.
Including olds-powered altereds... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The first year that had a split center exhaust, where there was a definite divider at the exhaust flange surface was '57, on the 371's.
Sorry I haven't posted them altereds or other pics, but I kinda figured people might not have been following the thread anymore.

Well, I thought I'd bring this thread back to the top since it was brought to my attention that I've been neglectful in my responses here. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and besides the fact, I'd like to see some more ROCKET photos. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

There is still quite a few newly chromed pieces in the basement from his 1950 models. I have no clue what his intentions are. He has no use for any of it since he's done his '56. He's not a swap meet type person nor does he sell/buy on ebay.
Men.... go figure http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Denice,Denice,DENICE, How could you let those 50's get away.
Got to be my favorite year.OUTSTANDING!!!!!

Since they were Dad's, I had no control. Actually mom has the control and when mom says she's tired of cruzn the countryside in the heat of summer without air, dad listens. He finsihed a most awesome '56 this past June and mom is thrilled. Dad knows how to keep his hot rod hunny happy http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
So who's convert in your photo???
[ QUOTE ]
Hotrodladycruiser! That's only the third time I have ever seen those valve covers for the late Olds! I have one pair, and the other pair was on a boat engine locally (and not for sale either). One of mine is no name with a breather like the one shown, the other has the cursive Edelbrock script in the center, but otherwise identical. I believe these were Edelbrock's first production run, as they later had two other versions that didn't look the same. If you have mismatched covers like I just described, Id be interested in attempting a trade with you to get us both a matching pair...
[/ QUOTE ]
Unfortunantly for you, mine do match. If they didn't I would be happy to trade with you. I had a email from someone quite a while ago asking me details about them. It's nice to have alittle background on them in case I'm asked about them in the future. Thanks.
Ok, Rocketeers, lets see some more photos http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Haha, well I have a feeling mine is yours...or used to be. All I know is it used to be owned by some Olds nut in Puyallup...;)
