I am looking all over for a manual box. I am curious if anyone has any experience using one of the GM 1/2 ton getrag 3500 trannys.

I think they were also used in some of the S-10's instead of the T5.

I just wanted to check on the gear ratio's are any good and make sure they would bolt up to a 55-84 SBC. I am pretty sure the bell housing pattern is the same for the 88-94 truck motors.

Being truck transmisions - do they suck to shift?

I am going to have a 3.00 rear ear to start with so a steep first gear won't bother me that much.

I also see that they have a top loader shifter location - so I think that will be good.

Any advice here would be apprecitated.

that's the tranny i'm using in a chevy truck on s-10 frame swap, i drove the s-10 before i tore it apart, felt just like a t-5 driving. yeah a deep first gear, but run a taller rear gear and you'll be set. i dunno how it will last, i've heard epople grumble about their strength, but i figure if its the tranny gm used in full size trucks, it's gotta be a little more stout than a non-WC t-5. also used in dakotas i think. aftermarket shifters are available, don't knmow about clutches yet.
