Moon discs question

What detail can I use for a rough estimate period ID, for a set of moon disc ?
Is there differents stamped trade mark depending of the period ?
Since when the snap-on style discs are produced ?

the only thing i can tell you is the older ones dont go all the way to the edge of the rim, they leave a small amount exposed as the laters ones cover the whole thing, and the newer ones have a lip

If they are actually Maytag washing machine lids or Wheel covers off of Jenny airplanes, they are real, real early

Early, authentic Moon wheel discs were sold primarily for lakes/Bonneville and drag racers, and were mounted with screws tapped into the wheel rims. I don't know exactly when they were introduced, but I would guess around '53/'54. If you're looking for early authenticity, I think these would be the ones you want.

The snap-on kind appeared later, for wannabe street-driven cars. I believe that Moon made some, but they were also produced by other manufacturers. Apart from their mounting method, they had a step or flange near the outside edge, intended to stiffen their perimeter. Despite this they were very easily dented when you pushed them into the wheel. I'd say these may have appeared around '56 or '57.

I never owned a set of the screw-on ones, but I did have some snap-ons. I don't recall any markings that would have identified their age or their manufacturer, but I may just not have noticed.

I have a set of 15" moon discs that are 50 years old.
These are screw on with the name MOON stamped on the
front edge.
I also have a pair of 16" eelco's with the little feet
logo stamp on the edge.These I'm not really sure of the
year.

I've only used screw-on ones. Had a set of Moons with the moon eyes logo stamped in, very tiny, on the edge. Have seen Eelco too - small feet stamped in the edge. Depending on your rims, can be a bitch to get tubelss tires to seat with holes drilled!

I have had my Moon discs for over 10 years and they have the "Mooneyes" as well as MOON stamped adjacent to each hole.

I had a set of snap-ons on my street-driven Black Widow in 1957, Tony. I was looking for something different and sure didn't feature WWWs on the car. I ran the ersatz Moons for less than a week. They were a pain in the butt to install without dimpling them, and since I had to remove my hubcaps for tech each week the situation was not tolerable. Besides that, I thought they looked rather dumb. I doubt they were made by Moon, they were much too affordable. I think I paid something less than twenty-five bucks for the entire set at Burbank Muffler, on San Fernando Road.

Yep, I put them on my '57 Olds in its first year. Before long I dented them so badly that I threw them away. They must have been inexpensive!

I bought my first ones in 1984 for our chopped Studebaker. They were the "traditional" screw ons. Moon sent the wrong size and gave me a good deal to keep them and reorder the correct size. I put the "wrong" 13" set on my wife's 1978 Toyota and the replacement 14" set on the Stude. I later had a set of 15" on a '72 Monte Carlo and bought a set in 2000 to put on our 2001 %$ #@%&*%$........

These are the newest ones......
