Does the oil filter adapter,for a spin on filter,require a gasket? I can't remember. thanks, Glenn

I don't think there is on mine... been a while since I changed the oil, but I'd say no.

are you talking about the adapter that let's you to go from a cannister type filter to spin on filter? if that's it , they used a big square edged O-ring


not all sbc's had a spin on filter , the first one had no filter at all!... 1956 to about 1968 had a cannister , then chevy switched to a spin on

Yes the adapter deal.It is a '93 block,that had a remote oil cooler,and I wanted to just have a spin-on filter.I found a spin-on adapter,but I didn't know if it used a gasket or not. A square "o" ring?? I don't see anything mentioned in the chevy books. I vaugely remember my '65 chevelle wagon,went from a canister style,to spin on, and a felt washer-gasket of somekind. The adapter blew off,leaking oil everywhere. I changed it back to cannister style. I don't want a repeat of this,and do not want to use the oil cooler,either. What do I need?? where's Fathack?? thanks, Glenn

When you purchase a new GM Chevrolet V8 crate engine (such as a ZZ4) you have to purchase the filter adapter # 03952301 and the bolts 03951644.

They would work on your 93 also.........

jegs has the adaptors, i think mine was like 15 or 20 bucks. the square o ring mentioned is a circular ring, but square in cross-section, like a slab cut out of a pipe, or a ring on a piston is all. i am inclined to think that in 68, they made the switch. my 68 327 has the spin on deal and i don't think it was adapted. could be wrong.

He has a 93 block. And, he has the spin on adapter piece. The part numbers posted above are the right ones for the adapter and bolts.

I have never used a gasket between the adapter and the block myself.

He is not talking about the adapter to convert the early canister filter blocks over to a spin on. He's talking about the little aluminum piece that every factory spin on filter SBC has stock.

The part is not actually an adaptor...it is a oil filter bypass, it works using a spring and valve. If I remember correctly, you can modify them so that the oil filter is never bypassed. And no there is not a gasket for the bypass.
