View Full Version : Intro from a Throttler... at the salt

The Deviator
08-14-2004, 04:12 AM
Hi, my name is Dekon (Deakon Shine the Deviator to the guys in the club). I'm a member of the Throttlers of Salt Lake. I am a metal fabracator by trade. I've been a lurker for months and noticed a few posts on my car before. I thought it was time to join. I have the '28 roadster pick-up with the radiator in the bed and the big 21" V-8 wire wheels.

Thanks for all of the help from the fellow HAMBers durring our misshap last week in Washington durring the Hot Rod a Rama.

Oh, by the way I'm making this post from the bend in the road on the salt flats... can't wait.. the action starts in the morning!

I think you could still get it lower... maybe section the body?
I also dig the iron cross on the front... iron crosses scare people and are cool... Maybe pout a few more on the car... one on each door, one on the tail gate, put them on the valve covers... kind of make it your "theme"... Even though you don't need a radiator shell... you COULD make a shell that looks like a big Iron Cross.

BTW... welcome to the HAMB!

Ohhhh.... I'm Sorry! I had no idea that Deviator TM was the Annointed One! Thou shalt not bust Deviator's balls! He is holier than thou! All those from Salt Lick City shall be left unsoiled by the unwashed masses....

I either like or hate that RPU depending on how I look at it. Right now, while I admire the innovation and engineering involved and how he seems to improve it as he goes, the whole thing looks unballanced to me. No grill really messes with the fit and finnish as well as the ungainly lowness (Thou shall not poke the sleeping giant "Scrub Line" in the nuts with thine staff). We won't talk about the everpresent Ironcross (They are the pox on thou!).

But that's just me. Welcome. You have skills.

And I think what Sam said was FUNNY. Nothing more nothing less.

I like the way you've put that, it made me laugh, but Scrub line - shumb line! A 320 mph top fueler has the rear wheels above the scrub line. So do funny cars and prostock cars. They don't seem to be worried about it. I saw countless salt cars at the flats last weekend violating the 'scrub line' law. Man, I guess the 'scrub line police' have their work cut out for them! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey here's a thought: if you don't like YOUR scrub line violated, don't do it, but most of all, keep it to YOUR damn self!

If all you are trying to do is get Deek's goat, tease him about the way he trys to say aluminum. That gets him more upset than this subject ever will...

Its all the unnecessary shit that needs to be cut out, if you dont like something then fine, but dont waste bandwidth. remember what everyones Moma said " if you dont have nothing nice to say then dont say anything at all" something like that

Hey man, I knew you guys were just ribbin' him, no harm in that. I didn't take it seriously, just as I named ya the scrub line police... just a little rib! To each their own is my moto.

But as long as were getting on a serious note: I don't worry about the plane crashing every time I fly in one. I take the same approach to the hot rods. Make it as safe as you feel comfortable with. What about air bags, side impact bars, seatbelt pretensioners, crumple zones and colapseable steering columns? The same arguement could be made for those items as well. If a guy in a race car isn't worried, than neither am I. I don't live my life inside a bubble taking no risks, and I would guess you don't either. I believe that there comes a point where you have to quit worrying about what could happen, and just drive the damn thing. Anyhow, I want you to know that I got the humor in your and Sam's posts and was not offended at all...

It's not about safety as much as it's about style and craftsmanship. I don't worry about stuff happening all the time but it's about the challenge of building something right. You have to set goals for yourself. As for me, I think saying fuck it to life and limb and making your car as low as possible is a cop out. The lowness becomes the defining factor or one of the major ones. I like low cars but I like cars that look like they're going fast standing still better and to me if your car is an inch of the gound it looks "planted" like it ain't going anywhere. Anybody can build a car so it's just off the ground but it takes a craftsman to build a car that takes scrub line into consideration while still trying to get the car at a good "under the radar" altitude. True, if you're building a salt car or a top fueler, you have differnt goals but if the only thing like a top fueler on your car is that it's scraping the ground, then you can't use that as your model.

Again, I don't really care what anybody else does and am not going to try to tell anybody else what to do, but I am going to reserve the right to make fuck-wad comments about stuff I see that I like or don't like. I'm just like that... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I was waiting for Deek to answer this, since it's his post. I guess I'll step in here.

A few years ago, before our club had chosen a name, we were at the California Hot Rod Reunion. We started talking to an older gentelmen that really liked our stuff. He mentioned that his father (who had passed on) was a founding member of the Throttlers of Hollywood. He mentioned that he still had all of his Dad's plaques, timing tags and jackets. He told us stories about his dad's involvment in the club in the begining of land speed racing. Did you know that the SCTA was founded in a meeting at the Throttlers' club house? I didn't until we talked with him. He himself, in his high school days, tried to start the Throttlers club back up. He said it only lasted for about 7 years, then everyone lost interest. Anyhow to make a long story short, we got his blessing to use the Throttlers as our club's name.

The original club was a land speed club. Membership in a club was required to run on the dry lakes back then. This winter our club will start work on a land speed car. We plan to use the powerplant from my old 8-second street car. This should provide plenty of power to push our car over the 200mph mark. We like to stick to the roots as much as possible. Hopefully with everything we have done so far and with what we plan in the future, we will do the name of the Throttlers proud.

That's a cool story!

I guess I should turn over a new leaf and stop making sarcastic remarks about people's cars... I realize that there is a depth to each and every person... it's just a little hard to tell sometimes over the computer.

Anyone else have this problem?

Maybe we should start a support group!

Sam.

I like the throttlers and there cars. I dont really know them but I got the inside scoop from my connection in the S.L.C.. They build nice cars, drive them, and most important of all I heard they were hardcore car guys. As an added bonus loud pedal has a model A with a hemi in it.
nice work!

Wish i woulda stopped and introduced myself at the salt. I saw your cars, but I was the one with the maroon 37 Chevy truck, not too far down from you guys. Next year I will have more time and do a better job of meeting some of the people. Welcome to the HAMB

remember the hate house? that was the best stuff goin...everything was so screwed up with politics and religion, that the punk/hardcore scene was extremely tight.some of the best people i ever met lived there.
