Here's the plan. My 36 pickup will be under the knife as soon as my lazy contractors get done with the shop.

The latest plan is Dark Navy body color with same color firewall and dash, Black frame with Ivory wheels and accents, i.e. Pinstriping etc.

My question is.....Is that too many colors? I don't wanna be all dressed up like the "stockyards pimp" (TM) but I don't think you will notice the difference between the Navy and the black all that much.I'm all about being subtle....no red wheels for me. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Opinions?

Not bad combo at all. Laid back. What is the motor's color? Pinstripe color? Black frame is cool. A touch of stainless hardware will go a long way. Screw's, bolt's, not many just where they are highly visible. Shock's, and other frame componet's have a low key finish as well? The over all theme sound's very good. For flash you can add Baby Moon's for another look.

If it's the wrong color, one is too many. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The wheels will be solids, painted cream with 40 Deluxe caps.

The motor will be a dual quad 327 painted ivory with bell top air cleaners(chrome) and Chrome Chevrolet script valve covers, cast iron gray ram horns.

The interior will be Navy with Ivory inserts.

You are doing a classic color combo. We did a roadster last year the same........loks simple and conservative.

I want a late 50's early 60's look. I know the powerplant is marginal on the year but........it'll have 461 casting heads and the block is a 64. Just don't run the casting numbers....I'll say it's a 58 283. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

If you are set on the dark navy body color, may I suggest either Emerald Green(these are all 1-Shot colors)for the wheels and striping or Process Blue. Those two colors work very well together as striping as they have approximately the same "color value"so one doesn't overpower the other.I got this color combination by seeing a necktie made for Saab in their boutique.Just my opinion.

I think your combo sounds sweet... I had a old timer tell me once that there are only three colors that should be on a hot rod. Take it for what its worth. He said Black,
Aluminum, and chrome...

so far im only counting one color,Navy,,the white is a complimentary color, accenting it..the black doesnt count since its on the frame(and tires)...the only way the frame color would work AGAINST you is if it was painted the SAME color as the body,.,frames are supposed to be black...

im tottaly digging your color combo!

Yeah, I agree. You are pointed in the right direction. But I'd take Safari's suggestion and pick a wheel color that matches up with 1 Shot just incase....

When I say Ivory...it's closer to a cream actually.

The colors you are describing are both traditional and cool.
Build what you like, not what's some other guys idea of traditinal.

If you see the frame on the outside of the car like a '32... I think it should be body color.

In the late 50's and early 60's a lot of times EVERYTHING got painted.

My buddy Tim's roadster was painted in '57... the frame, fenders, front axle... all got painted. Sheesh, even the brake lines were painted body color. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ok, that's going too far.

My suggestion is to pic up Andy Southard's Hot Rods of the 50's and his Hot Rods of the 60's books. They are THE BEST color pics of cars of that era (albeit California cars) that you will find anywhere.

I would also steer clear of any generic colors... stick to the color charts for the big 3 cars of the era you want to reflect. Painting the truck with a 50's or 60's factory color will leave people wondering how you got it so right... anything else will be 80's weird.

Sorry for the lame ass kid in the pic... but this truck was at Tardels the last time I was there. It was a 70's refugee that looked right. The cool thing about it was the old paint set over black... things like the inside of the bed and the door jambs were left original black while the rest was a wild green repaint.

I have that book somewhere...if it didn't walk.
I'll hafta check it out. I have been looking at a lot of old mags but they tend to lean towards the show cars. Very few pickup in the 35-36 era ever made the press. I have searched quite a few swap meets hoping to gleam a small bit of info.Gene Winfield built a 35 that was really sweet but there is only one small pic of it in there and very few details on it.
