A few weeks ago I bought an Eldo HEI distributor for my 472 and I can't seem to get the damn thing to run right. I've messed with the timing and the fuel mix but my engine still detonates under load. If I get on it from a stop or try to get on the freeway with some speed, it detonates. But once I'm up to speed it purrs like a kitten, doesnt run too hot or nuthin. I just don't get it.I've tried everything I can think of, short of putting the points dist. back in.But I spent a bill on the damn thing and I want to make it work! The cap, rotor, weights and springs, vacuum advance, wires are all new, and it has an Accel coil on it. Could it be the control module? Like I said I'm stumped. Any thoughts on the subject would be apreciated. You guys are all thats keeping the thing from the parts bin. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks Kid - I broke the crank in the 331 and the 472 was free so... gotta do what ya gotta do. Dont worry, I still have the 331, just figured i'd put it in something else down the road. Besides 375 HP is pretty nice. Iffen it runs right.

Yah Right! you can't have it, a 68-70 472 is the motor to have! For those that know about Caddy bigguns, the only good stock 500 is the 70 Eldo, after that they went to shit,( dropped compression ratios and poopy heads). Y'all can keep that 500. But, there are ways to make them pump out 600 HP on street gas and very little dough. Shhh! Don't let the others know, it's our little secret. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Jerry, I think you're on the right track. When I bought the dist. the vacuum advance was shot. I called my parts guy to order a new one and he informed me that that HEI was only offered on Eldo's from 73-74 and vacuum advance pots were no longer manufactured for the unit. I brought the old one in for comparison, but seeing how it was blown out, we could'nt guage the right vacuum necessary for my car. The decision came down to two units and I chose the $12.50 one over the $25.00 one. I tried hooking the line to the low vac. side of my carb. but that didn't change anything. How can I find out what pot I need? No one seems to Know.
