View Full Version : A bitch about the "Rattlecan Nationals"

After reading the invitation here on the HAMB to "drop by" the Rattlecan Nationals on Friday before the CHRR, I rented a car and drove to the Harris Ranch from Bakersfield.

As I recall, according to the "invitation", things were to start around 9 AM and run until mid-afternoon. Well, I showed up about 10:45 - thinking I'd have plenty of time to meet people, check out the rides, and get some answers to questions I had about my project.

After barely having a chance to look at the cars (about 15 minutes, I'd estimate), much to my surprise, the entire group - except for one or two cars - fires up and drives off!

You're certainly welcome to run your event as you please, but maybe a bit more thought could be given toward the "casual" visitor. I wasted a half day (and about $70!).

Thanks for nothing - and oh yeah, don't worry about missing me next year. I'll be at the track.

Hmmm. I had a similar experience, but the opposite outcome.

I rolled in late, because I had to change a fuel pump that morning. I got there about 10:30, then to my surprise people started heading out about 11:00...

...so I followed them. We all went for a drive, had some lunch, met some great people, and then drove on to "the track".

I had a better time Friday than I did at "the track" on Saturday.

You get back what you put in.

I will see the rest of you at the RCN next year.

Sorry that didnt work out for you, Stan. However, I re-read the thread and it was mentioned that the thing kinda informally started Thurs PM (you shoulda seen the cars that were only there for an hour or so Thurs), and of course first thing Fri morn. The time of 8:00AM was mentioned, as was a saddle-up for a lunch run, which out here in crazy-California is sometimes around noon. So you get there at 10:45 and the party moves on at 11:00...wheres the bitch?? Maybe you oughta bitch about that teacher that taught you to tell time. Oh, and after our crazy-time lunch, a couple cars did come back and mostly nothing was accomplished.
Dont worry about next year, youre spots already been re-sold.

Homeresque - that was funny! especially now that I know you!

the best part is that you rented a brand new car to be late!?

this was the first show
that I left on time
and made it on kinda time.
(musta been that banana)

anyway,
it wasn't only about the cars,
but the quality of the cars keepers,
makes it permanent on next years calendar.

Hey Stank, if you knew ANYTHING about the RCN, you would know that it's the type of show where you actually DRIVE your hotrod to it, I can't even understand the thought process in driving to an event like this WITHOUT a hotrod, kinda like RickyRacer needing a condom, just can't see the reason........ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I gotta agree with everyone, the original post said that the plan was to leave for lunch on Fri. I was planning to originally come down Thurs, but my wife had to work. So instead we left SF Bay Area at 6:00 AM to get down to Harris Ranch by 9:00 including stopping for breakfast. Shoulda stopped for gas too.......

However, the point is that the RCN is a loosley organized event with no official schedule. But is a hell of a lot of fun. Thanks to derelict for convincing me to go.

My Roadster didn't make it down Thursday eve, so I switched vehicles and plans, and showed up on Friday morning at 11:00 AM... on a cramped sportbike- 170 miles one way. Same 2 or 3 cars were left. I asked where everybody went, and headed off to Hanford to find them- another 30 miles away. So very glad I did... I met up with a bunch of great guys (38Chevy454 Terry, Cop Shop, Mild Mitch, Mark Morton, Kevin, Scott, etc.), saw some sweet rides and still felt like I was part of the RCN. Frank McFadden rules- Let me just say that now.
I had family plans on Sat/ Sun, so the CHRR was unfortunately out this year, but overall my 330 miles of pretzel posing was worth it!

I will definately be back next year, for the whole weekend (starting Thursday eve), and in my jalopy!

Shit! There were goodie bags and they were handed out by Uncle Frank and Son Vern. Best damn goodies you'll EVER GET at a nothing car deal..
Sorry you missed us, your loss I guess.

And, I didn't even GO to the TRACK. That's how much MORE Fun RCN is! It's about the Iron, and the Folks.

My sincere apologies to all.

I should have known better than to post before I re-checked the original message. Funny, I knew I was going to regret my words even while I was typing the message. I wish I could blame my shitty attitude on jet lag, or perhaps the fact that I'm from Nebraska, but I'm afraid it was just stupidity multiplied by rudeness. I can't do much at this stage of my life to help the first situation, but there's no excuse for my nasty comments.

I think the biggest part of my disappointment was that I was really looking forward to the deal. As for showing up without a car, I knew it wasn't a spectator event, but had hoped to have time (away from the bustle at Famoso) to check out how others had done some things and get some answers to questions I had about how to proceed with my build-up.

I'm sure I got what I deserved for not paying more attention - and being an asshole besides. Bring on the whippng - I'll try to shut up and take it like a man. I just hope you all won't judge me too harshly in the long run.

Don't worry about it, You just would have had too much fun, drank too much & forgot everything you saw. so are you putting a big 6 in your rpu?

Yup. A 292, just like in my screen name. I'm doin it "60s-style" and have just about all the major components collected, including a set of Hurst/Airheart brake calipers I picked up at the CHRR - I just need to get to work.

I think I've decided that I'd better keep the top on it though (I just have to face the fact that I live in Nebraska, not California), so I guess it's just a PU now.

If I ever figure out how to post photos here, I'll put up some shots.

Take care-
