just from what i've read at my short time here i kinda get teh feeling that not many people are versed in the ways of the lead. well to make it a little easier to get goin i am going to throw out some "recipies" for tinning butters, soldering salts and some "no rust" so here it goes. granted it would probably be easier to find someone that sells the stuff, but its always nice knowing you can make it if you have to. I've usually get the chemicals of the internet.

tinning butter #1

mix ingredients into pot over low heat

all amounts by weight

500 parts oilve oil
400 parts mutton tallow

slowly stir in

250 parts powdered rosin

boil up once and allow to begin to cool

mix in 125 parts water that is saturated with sal ammoniac(add while stirring untill the sal ammoniac wont dissolve any more)

allow to cool before use

tinning butter #2

50 parts oilve oil
50 parts powdered sal ammoniac(usually comes in a block, powder yourself)

mix till warm, cool to use

no rust

mix by weight

equal parts

zinc chloride
sal amoniac saturated in water
distilled water

filter before use

soldering salts

equal parts

neutral zinc chloride(free of iron)
powdered sal ammoniac
mix with minimat water untill pasty

mix 50:50 with water to use

hope this is of some help to someone

cool info. i bet there's a lot of folks here who would like to try this, but plastic just sounds so much easier (comparitively so, anyway).

fear of the unknown?
