In recent months there have been several mentions of a method for peaking a hood different than the way Denise did on Big Olds. I think it's been called the 'rod' method or something. Well, anyway, I've searhed Tech and can't find it. Anybody got a link? Pros and cons of one over the other?

Thanks, Rodney

Just like anything else on hot rods and customs, there are a hundred ways to do everything. On my car, I only peaked the front portion of the hood since I re-used one of the stainless spears from the rear fenders on my 52 as a bullnose. This kept the peak in a "stronger" part of the hood so there was less tendency to warp the metal, and less risk of the filler coming loose.

Anyway, the basics: you lay a rod of about 0.25" dia. in the groove between the 2 halves of the hood. Tack the rod in place every inch or so. Build up to it with fiberglass-reinforced body filler ("tiger hair"), then finish with regular filler.

The caveats: You are welding what is essentially 0.25" metal to about 19-20 gauge sheet metal, so you gotta be careful that you don't get the weld to hot/cold. Also, that's a lotta filler yer puttin' in. Hoods flex a lot when opened and get slammed shut, so there's a lot more risk of poppin that filler loose. Also, you better for dang sure make sure you keep that rod straight.

how bout using lead as a filler? it will put some heat in the pannesl granted, but if done right it shouldn't be a problem, just gotta be care ful. and i wouldn't go on top of that hood with a #5-7 like most peaole use. i'd probably use a 1 or 2 . may take longer but will have more control.

I used the rod method on my 53 and it turned out pretty good.
