An article ran in our hometown paper the other day about George Rarey. He was evidently well remembered for his cartooning and nose art in WWII.

They have a small display of his work at the local airport for a while, I went today to see it and was disapointed there wasn't more.

Anyway, I searched the web and found out he was a very well respected officer as well as an artist. He died a few days after D day acording to the website in his honor. There are several if you just type in George Rarey in the search. Thought the cartoonists and nose art fans might like to look him up. Kind of cool when you find history right under your nose.

Really cool stuff. I assume from the pic with the baby and stork that he was a new dad while at war. That's gotta be bittersweet for his son. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

That's COOL!

Do any of the nose art books actually have info on who painted what? None of mine do.

Most of the nose art on the B-17s at Great Ashfield home of the 385th was done by Ann Hayward a young English girl with the Red Cross. The photo of "Angel's Sister" is her work, painted after "Homesick Angel" crashed on August 15, 1944. The following year "Angel's Sister" was involved in a midair collision and crashed April 4, 1945.

I have been a fan of RAREY for quite some time. Some of his work is at the CAF museum here in town. Just take a look at my Avatar. Thanks for the post about him Gordon

Fritz, speaking of art, and not trying to hijack the post, but I have an old canteen cup with the name Bill Fey, Brooklin, Ny. hand engraved on it. Also his wife/girlfriend?,Vera, and the years 1942,43,44,45. I think they call that "trench" art.

I called Vera Fey several years ago and asked if she was interested in it. She promptly told me she was not interested, and hung up. I was going to send it to her or the family for FREE. Oh well, I tried. Nice piece of history.

I really enjoy the post on the nose art.

Thanks, McCray

weekender, Those could have been the years they dated and she married someone else!?!?!? or he might not have made it home. My father-in-law grew up In Brooklyn. he made it but nun of his pals did. so go figure. Keep it as a testimet to some one who fought for our freedom!
