View Full Version : Is this a lame idea???

I've got moon discs on my wheels which means I gotta pull 'em every time I wanna check the air pressure.
Could I drill the rim for a second valve stem on the back? Since it's a fenderless roadster, there'd be no problem gettin' to the 2nd stem.
Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to do this??
Am I being too lazy??? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
that's one of the best ideas i've heard all day,
no joke

I agree, easy and effective solution. Why do the best solutions to problems always seem to be the easiest? Seems that we sometimes overkill something and overlook the obvious. While you are doing the work, you might want to weld up the original front hole, you will have to dismount the tire anyway to put the new stem in. That way you have one less potential leak path. Although I do not think it would hurt having the original stem in place.
Usta be "normal" for chrome reversed wheels to have the stem left in the same location when the rim was reversed so it ended up on the back where they didn't show, and a chore to get to to check pressure but what the hay, that's customs!
(general info) this trick was cool on cars with all drum brakes but a caliper could do quick destruction to a long valve stem on a small diameter wheel.
I've seem flush mount valves...Who makes them?

Just be sure to check the clearance with the brake drum, hose, etc. I ran a set of wheels we reversed on a shoebox in highschool (1965) and left the stems on the inside because it looked cleaner, had no problems.

I think that it was such a simple idea that it kinda threw me off. I've looked and it seems like there's enough brake clearance etc.
Thanks for the feedback guys!

You could also do it like they do on the bicycle discs made by Moon. They have a 1.25 inch hole in the disc and have a chrome plumbers hole plug stuck in it. I don't know if I'd trust it at freeway speeds though.

It's funny, on the 'floating front hubcap' post
someone was talking about how it took a long time to
check the pressure in his front tires...
I was going to reply with this very same idea,
but got sidetracked and forgot about it until now...
Yet another way to utilize a Great Idea..!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Not lame at all. According to my old man it was common to do "back in the day"
