just got a call to come look at a hemi, but I dunno squat about em, besides that I'd like to have one. The only thing he could tell me about it was that the distributor was in the front. I was trying to find pictures of the various motors but could only find a couple. WHat do I need to look for (good and bad) when I look at this thing. I'm probaly gonn ahead out there soon and it's still gonna be dark....Just looking for an easy way to ID em....I'll be taking the camera with me.

Distributor in front is a later one, I think... like a 426! That's big bux if it is. Later ones only came (stock) as a 426. Early ones will have a valve cover that says "Firepower", "Red Ram" or "Firedome" again, if they are stock. Good luck! Any hemi is cool, but a 426 is just plain BAD! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

what's the going rate on a 426, if that's what it is? I think it's sitting in an old unfinished roundy-round studebaker, Which I'm not too crazy about (no offense to stude lovers). I'm guessing the car wasn't built in the 50's so I doubt it would be too early of a hemi. Shit like this has a way of popping up when I'm broke as shit.

depending on the year and completeness, a 426 might be worth 8-12 grand for a buildable one. heres the super hot tip: the company that was making mopar performance's crate motors and blocks went belly up. so that means there are NO 426 HEMIS CURRENTLY IN PRODUCTION. until another outfit takes over production for chrysler, the market for hemi parts will be very good. oh yeah, and if the distributor is in the front(side end with the water pump) it must be a 426 hemi.

four-thirteen is right. Also in the above pic, under the coil will be a machined flat pad on the block. Should say something like 426E. The letter after 426 tells you the year. Hope this helps.

Nice late model flatty there, wonder if it has the Merc crank? Is that the Merc carb? Too bad it's so far away.

yeah, I'd like to pull the flattie out of it and see what the deal is with it, but they won't sell just the drivetrain. If you want one part, you gotta get em all. The body is royally fucked. I was looking for some kinda stamping on the heads and stuff but couldnt' find anything. There were too many rattlesnakes out to hang around it too long. I was proud of my ol lady for going out in all those raggedy buildings and piles of brush full of rats snakes and spiders though. She might turn out alright after all......

Twice a year Zepher Hills in Florida has four days of guys running around in circles in their little dirt bullring. All vintage-style cars. The "late models" are '55-'57 Chevy bodied cars. Midgets, Quarter midgets, dirt trackers, very cool. I've often that that would be a blast! It's like racing go-carts for grown-ups.
The guys who do it say there are several friendly races a year, and many of them do it on the cheap.
How much was the guy asking for that car? And more importantly, what else did he have?!

nothing else was there, that was the only left after the estate sell. There was a nice sized shop there but everything had been sold out of it except for the compressor and a few dozen hoosier dirt & drag tires.
I think they wanted a grand for the car....I was pretty sure the hemi thing was too good to be true, but I had to make sure....

they want a grand for that? you should beg, borrow,or steal $1000 somewhere and get it anyway.you'd have more than a grand's worth of fun at a vintage race...
