I realize that it varies county to county (specifically Dallas area), but I need some basic emmissions/smog law info. Does a '78 model year need to be tested at all? I read that "antique" vehicles are expempt, but what classifies a vehicle as antique in TX? 25 years or older? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, 25 and older...so a '78 would be exempt.

I beleive 25 and older are considered antique.

Antique cars are required to have a safety inspection. Basically if it stops and has lights and a horn you are good for a sticker.

That's pretty much standard...brake lights, turn signals, mirror(s), wipers, horn, and most likely an uncracked windshield.

For a safety inspection, all of the following must be in operating condition:

Headlights, brights (if originally equipped) all turn signals (if originally equipped), tail and brake lights, windsheild wipers, brakes, emergency brake, if it has power steering it must not leak, seatbelts (can not be frayed or torn)...I think thats it.

Or come to Denton and I'll make sure it passes regardless of any of the above http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Aren't the inspection stickers issued per county you reside in? My buddy's moving to a Dallas suburb (not sure which one), and I mentioned just having it registered in another "smog-friendly" county, but he said that wouldn't fly.

Settle down ladies. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Rob, You can have your car inspected anywhere you'd like, to my knowledge (at least I've had mine done in other counties)...however, if your car is registered in a county where it is required to be smogged, then I think you have to have it inspected in that county.

There are two types of registration for older cars, Classic and Antique. Classic has to pass state inspection, Antique does not. Of course with either of those you're technically not supposed to drive the car on a daily basis. The other good thing about Antique registration is that it goes by a 5 year cycle, so you only have to register it every time that cycle is up.

Oh and if your car was originally equipped with seat belts it has to have them. If it wasn't, then you don't.

Bass is right on this except I think you can drive classic daily. I really don't think it is any different than a regular registration other that you get that special classic plate.

Antique is a deal because of the five year thing but is only supposed to be driven in parades to car shows and stuff like that, but hey, who's checking.

I'm going with the antique registaration on mine when it's through.

All the things mentioned above are what is required for a safety inspection but they are mostly concerned about cars that need to be smog checked, so usually they pull you in and if it stops and you got lights they start writeing out the sticker.

At least thats how it happens at the place I go.

Only $12 for a safety inspection.

Some places are assholes....when I took my Cutlass to get inspected, they failed it twice for the E-brake. Probably revved the damn thing up to 3 grand before it moved...

I went to another place with my el camino, told the guy I was a little unsure about some things and he said no problem, and I got my sticker.

It's $12.50 btw.

Oh, one more thing...no bald tires. You're '50's vintage -wont hold air for more than three hours- bias plies wont cut it usually.

Hey, K&R,

I got kin that just moved down your way. He's got an 84 Dodge Ram, fourbye, 360 (performer package and headers with 340 heads) and he is wondering what he'd have to do to be able to drive the thing down there. Luckily, they did away with the tailpipes sniffers here about 10 years ago, but what do you guys got down there?

I'm "holding" the truck for him till it hits 25, but if he could get it down there before that, he'd be a happy camper.

Thanks.

Jay
