well, tonight i am wrapping things up on Brett's model A tudor chop. i'm on my dinner break right now and will go out and finish up a few details shortly but for the most part it is done enough to show you all the results of all my cutting, welding and grinding.

first things first. i chop the 3 1/2" out of the door's window posts using the same method of measurement i described in PART 1. then it is clamped together and tack welded together ONLY on the outside face of the door...

once that is done bolt the door back on the body using the lower two hinges. then close the door, hold it tightly closed and push the top of the door to where it follows the verticle conture of the body evenly along the entire height of the door, THEN put a couple tacks on the inside of the window opening so that it all stays in place and the door fits the body just like it should...

next thing is we need to mark the spot where the recessed piece for the upper hinge goes on the A-pilar (we cut this out when we removed the 3 1/2" from the top of the post). how we do this is make a couple marks on the front of the A-pilar in line with where the center of the holes are in the hinge...

then trim the piece with the recess and the lower visor nut from the top piece of the A-pilar that we chopped off...

then we use the lines we drew on the A-pilar to line up our recess piece by the holes in it then trace em with a pen or scribe some lines...

do the same thing around the corner. the inside edge of the A-post is straight so we will line our part up on this side to ensure the hinge recess ends up in the right spot forward and back...

cut out the inside too. then after shaving a little off the top of the pieces we just cut out (enough so it goes back in place and it all lines up), we tack it all back together...

kustombuilder,
Thanks for the great posts on your chop job.
I just brought home a '30 tudor and you took all the guess work out for me. I know the A's are pretty straight forward, but you hit it all. Never mind this "final chapter" stuff, keep the info and and progress pics coming. Your posts have been fantastic.
I think it's time for me to start choppin!
Thanks again.

Mike is a VERY talented fabricator. You would think He has 30 years experience. He spends lots of time with some older pros and soaks up all kinds of great knowledge and puts his own spin on it. Someday he will be that old timer passing this knowledge down to someone else about the many project she has completed.

All I can say is I have learned alot and thanks!

See you Sunday Mike!

When I chopped my Model A, I noted that the front a pillars taper out as they go up. I ended up taking 5/8" out of the header to get the posts straight. Did you happen to measure them? Do the 28-9's taper out?

Anyway, the rest looks good! It looks like you're taking your time and doing it right... but what's that tractor grille doing on a hot rod? It makes the thing look like a... well, like a tractor. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

HA HA HA!! you'll have to ask Levis Classic about the grill, it's his car.

as for the posts they did not seem to taper out (towards the sides of the car you mean, right??), in fact i had to put a couple relief cuts int eh bottom corners of the front window opening to spread the posts apart just a tad.

the REST of the story will be tommarow when i drag it back to Brett's place in Traverse City and rid myself of it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif... actually i have to FINISH the front window frame and i am doing a bit more to the grill for him as well, so those parts will stay here a while.
