I wanna mount the front end on my modified with semi-elliptic springs for several reasons, it looks good, I don't wanna screw up the ackerman effect by mounting the tie-rod in front etc.
But I was wondering if there was some sort of special bracketery involved, 'cause I guess solid-mounting spring hangers to the axle won't cut it as I'm presuming they need to be able to twist....Do they?

Nope, you can mount the spring hangers to the axle. The spring will twist. I'd use a shackle though.

are you sure you dont mean Quarter elliptics?? ie one half of a 'normal' (semi elliptic) spring mounted to the chassis facing forward on each side? I've got a feeling thats what your'e talking about.just saying this so your answers are relevant. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Cristian, are you talking 1/4 Elliptical? Semi elliptics are like whats found under a 55 Chevy. If so, I welded a pad to the back of my axle and thru drilled it and the axle for a Tbucket type spring hanger.

right, 1/4 Epileptical http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
and shackles, that's what I meant too.
anybody have closup pics of this setup?

Also according to some book on car geometry if you mount the tie-rod in front of the axle if you make sure the line drawn throught the steering arms meets on the centerline of the car halfway the wheelbase instead of at the centerline of the rear axle you keep the Ackermann effect.

The set-up is a 36 axle with split wishbones. I welded a pad on the bottom of each frame rail and sandwiched the spring pack. I cut down a 53 Ford F-100 spring pack and drilled new locating holes(springs are HARD) for the front springs

Christian, There is some pommy car out there that has a removeable spring mount on its rear end that is perfect to use as a mount for 1/4 e springs on an I beam. just drill a hole in the side of the beam and bolt the mount into it. It takes a model A width spring too!!!

Unfortunately I can't for the life of me think of which one it is - maybe a Morris Iris.

do you know any limey's that may be able to shed some light on them??
