View Full Version : Fuel pressure regulator?

I think the problem with my carburetor is that the Full Gonzo electric fuel pump is just WAY too overpowered for the meager application!

It's the popular Carter universal electic pump...I think it's rated at lik 6-7psi or so...and it flows like a sewer plant!

I need to know if there's a reliable, dependable and accurate universal fuel pressure regulator that can be used to dial it down from the stratospheric pressures...something like 3-4psi is all that carb and motor needs!

(When I turned the pump on, it sounded to me like the needle and seat held it for a second...then just said "fuck that!" and let it go! Fuel was gushing out of the bowl vent all over the motor!)

Thing is...I gave the car a good shot of starting fluid today to get it fired, but once it fired it stumbled and coughed...then settled right down to a smooth idle. I had the pump off, but I'm sure there was still fuel in the bowl, and that's what it must have been running on for maybe 20 seconds or so. Carb may yet be okay...but I got to dial the pressure DOWN!

I never did think electric fuel pumps were a good idea with carburetors...but the mechanical pump on a 2.8 is a goofy, expensive little thing...and has THREE lines on it...likely one is a return, whicj I don't use in my Hack-r-iffic low buck fuel system!

Any ideas for a GOOD regulator??? I'll add it to my "parts list".

Thanks in advance, Gang! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

You can get the standard, dial-type fuel regulator from Kragen. Check in their cheesy Spectre section.

Yeah, check out old posts, I think someone asked this before... not 2 long ago...

I can't remember where, but I heard that the cheeper of the regulators at stores like AutoBone or Schlep Boyz is the better of them. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

For less the thirty bucks you can buy a Holley regulator (12-804) that will regulate fuel pressure from 1 to 4 psi. It has 3/78-inch NPT ports and comes with a mounting bracket.

For $12-$18 you can buy one of these beauties that work just great -- the darling of the Stromberg 97 crowd. I'm partial to this one for sentimental reasons; it reminds me of the index dial on my Little Orphan Annie decoder ring for which I paid a dime and two cereal boxtops when I was six. Unlike Annie's ring, this one can be read in the dark!

Yep, this is exactly the one you can get at Kragen, Shucks, Autozone, etc.

Yeah- that's the kind I bought two of before I went out and bought a Holley. They suck. It will work for a day or so and then it'll just give up and let full pressure through.

Buy the Holley regulator if you don't want to have to change it out later.

i had the cheap dial type. it went bad. friend chris went thru 2 or 3. buddy paul warned against them also. couple others had them go bad. sure, they're cheap, they might even have replacement warranties, but if it leaves you stranded leaving the disco at 3 AM, that would kinda suck.

go with the holley.

Greg-Im always better at giving advice than taking it-But Just gaet the stock 2.8 pup and put a short hose with a bolt in it to plug the third line...it will run better and flood less/cost less than the alternatives too

The Holley regulators are good, you have to put a guage on it to set the pressure. I had one of the cheap ones from Autozone on my coupe and it put me on the side of the road. It went bad and wouldn't let fuel through to the carbs. I took it off and got the Holley.

I hope I'm not too far out of line here but everyone is looking at the fuel pump as the problem. 6-7 lbs aint all that high. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif the old stewart warners used to put out 11-15. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Make sure your float seat is ok on the carb. If the rubber is cracked or has a scar, 1-2 lbs will still leak through. With all the shit they put in gasoline now a days, unless it is a brand new carb, or a rebuilt carb, the seat could be leaking by. If this is the case, all the regulators in the world won't help. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hack, I hear you! I installed the (sounds like) same Carter pump on my pickup. I'm running a 283 with a Carter 600. Started right up, then pissed gas out of all the possible places in the carb. I drained the carb, thinking that it had not been run in a while so things were stuck. Cleaned it up and come to find out half the gas was sitting on top of the cylinders. almost a major problem. I threw on a cheap Spectre regulator, set it at 2.5 and it now runs great.
