Don't know if it's custom (i'm not familiar with them) but I really dug the color of this car when I saw it:

Then there's this '56 that's chopped and sectioned...

It's not a Montclair, but here's my '55 Monterey.

If I didn't already own the 55 I'd opt out and look for a 56 instead. That would be my personal choice based on the fact that 56 is 12 volt and 55 is still 6 volt also the 56 has a 1 3/4" lower roof line. If you look at the photos already posted it's very clear how noticable the differance is. Again just my personal choice.

The '55 Monterey 2dr hdtp was a one year only body style. As you noted, it has the taller roof line that was a bit of a throw back to '54. The Monclair in both '55 and '56 had the new, lower roof line like the Crown Victorias received in the same years. In '56, all 2dr hdtps were of the low top variety. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
My '55 was originally a 6 volt system, but it was easily converted 12 volts! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Man, I'd like to know what YOU think a kustom is then...
Look at that '55 again...nosed (the "Mercury" letters are missing from the hood altho I'd have removed the bird too), decked, emblems missing, no door handles, no vent windows, bucket seats, all white interior, fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror, slammed, wheels (altho not what I'd have put on), two tone paint...and I'm sure I've missed a few things in the quik look I took...but please, define your "custom" for me...

OH MY GOD! That 56 is amazing! God blessed sectioned cars. Can't even imagine what it would cost to build that thing.

I think that the mid-'50s Mercs are one of the most beautiful cars of that era, even in factory form.
Here's one I found on Carnut's site.
Check 'em out. Carnut (http://www.carnut.com/photo/list/_merc52m.html)
