View Full Version : Shocks for the RPU?

I guess I need to get a set of shocks on the RPU so I can finish up the chassis. I'd rather not pay $80 per pair and was wondering if there is anything I can pick up cheap at NAPA.

I have F-100 shock mounts for the upper fronts and some Speedway spring perch lower mounts. In the rear I have no provisions for mounting shocks - yet.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, JH

Try some 1972 Chevy pick up shocks for 6 cylinder they worked great for my Tudor and are $13 a piece.

Went to NAPA and asked for these. What they showed me WILL NOT work on the front of my RPU - and were $48 each.

Got any part numbers?

Thanks, Jim

I'm working on the same problem for my 31 on 32 rails roadster, F1 mounts and P&J lower mounts, sounds like the same setup. I ended up with an eye to eye length of about 16" which would dictate a really long front shock. I've decided to cut down and bend the F1 mounts so I can run a shorter shock, to clean up the front a bit.
Here is the thread and the pics Rat helped me out with. f1 mounts (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB1&Number=471411&Forum=A ll_Forums&Words=shocks&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searc hpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=471380&Search=t rue#Post471411)

Did you ever find any shocks? I had already decided that the upper mounts were most likely going to have to be modified. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

NAPA # 20712

9.5 compressed
14.5 extended

you'll need to knock the metal bushing out of the center to use the F1 mounts... or grind the mount itself a bit. The hole on this shock is 1/2in.

Nope,, planned on saving up for some chrome ones since they're kind of in your face, Might end up getting the ones Killer suggested and painting them though.

Jim, go over on Broadway and see if Eddies Auto parts have some. He had a shit load of them. $5-10 each

I got the ones Killer suggested. They are hooded shocks and came with white paint on them. A little black paint (maybe even wrinkle finish) should help them quite a bit. $24 for the pair - and I didn't have to deal with Eddie. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
