View Full Version : San Diego Hambers, what's happening this weekend?
Don't know if I can get away but, I am taking the wife and boys to S.D. this weekend for a last ditch effort at a "family vacation". Been on a great number of outings the last couple years and the family has stayed home, so it's time to do the right thing. Anyway, maybe I can sneak out or even be my usual charming and diplomatic self and drag 'em along to a car show, drag race, tit bar, I don't know.....
Anything?

No runs that I know of, but there are cruise nights Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday night. The biggest one is in Escondido friday night, gets at least a hundred quality cars or more. (probably much more). It is about 20 minutes North of San Diego. Let me know if you want info one a couple smaller ones closer to downtown. Th. night in La Mesa, great cruise! Also one on Midway drive I think Friday night.
i think the coffin chasers show is up in o-side this weekend, can anyone confirm this

Its on Grand Avenue. Cars start showing up around 3 'clock and goes till dark.

If you are interested, the LAST DRAG RACE EVER at Carlsbad Raceway starts at 8 AM, Sunday, 8-8-04. It has finally happened- after having "this is the last year for Carlsbad Raceway" for close to 20 years, the curtain is finally, officially, falling this Sunday. It's been a 41-1/2 year run for Carlsbad, but the dozers move in next Monday, and last Tuesday, the City gave the owners (well, not the owners, but the guy who has been leasing the track property since 1985 or 1986) a "7 day notice to vacate". You can find out more on the Carlsbad raceway website. Too bad, sorry to hear it, what a long run though....
I'll be lucky to make it to the Grand ave cruise, maybe we'll eat dinner there somewhere. I'll check out your site again in regards to the cruise SoCalCarCulture, thanks

Whenever I am in Phoenix covering a race at Firebird or Speedworld, I always try to get some time to go fishing at my friend's house outside Payson (Trout? anything less that 3 pounds he wants you to throw back....) and I go right by the sad remains of Beeline Dragway...It's a rifle range or some crap now.

That's the only 1/4 miler in town. All the others are 1/8th.

Qualcom Stadium has 1/8 mile drags on Fridaynights, not sure about the schedule, take a look.

or if you want to make or loose some cash, the horses are raceing in Del Mar. The in-field is all grass for the kids to run around.

As I understand it, RaceLegal is on it's last legs, as well, as the San Diego City Government decided not to fund the project again... and without the $$, Qualcomm ain't gonna let 'em race....Buddy of mine was on a local TV channel last night, and when asked "what now" by the TV dork, he replied honestly- "Oh, there will still be drag racing in San Diego- but it will be on the streets, since there is no drag strip anymore"

I thought they were getting some kind of a grant from the state.
I don't see what the big deal is.
Back many many moons ago (70's&80's), it was the samething with skate parks. Then the kids skated in the streets, parking lots, malls, and where ever they could.
Not sure I've ever heard of a skateboarder killing a car full of people. They just kill them one at a time (re; Gator)
Now almost every town has a skate park. Now that I'm to old to enjoy them.
So now to race you have to drive out to the indian res?

Yep, that's pretty much it. I grant you, Carlsbad wasn't exactly the lap of luxury, but it was a safe place to race. And it is gone after this weekend, MAYBE, with a miracle, there might be some racing the weekend after, but in talking to Jeff Grismer,(His dad started the track back in aorund 1961-1962) I kinda doubt it.
Maybe if we planted some Pierson's Milk Vetch out in the pits, we could get the tree-huggers to stop all this foolishness..... ;-)(Hey, it worked for Glamis and Ocotillo...)Anybody got a Northern Spotted Owl they wanna loan me? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
