Can you install a 49-53 cam and timing cover on a 46-48 59AB engine and use the top-side distributor?
Thanks

Yes, direct bolt up although you may have to change the timing gear on the crank. You would probably want new timing gears anyway.
You will probably want to use some other distributor as the old Ford dizzy is about usless except in maybe a completely stock engine.Several other options are availablel

You will have to change the timing gear - they're cut opposite directions.

Stay away from the newer mallory distributors unless you like headaches. Really poor reputation.

I've got a couple of 8BAs I could salvage parts from if you have a little time. Sending you a PM.

Thanks Ted.
Any opinions on the best dizzy?
It will be close to stock, with alium heads and most likely a dual 2 barrell intake.
He planed on a stock dizzy with a Pertronics conversion, but if there are better options he's all ears!

I'm running stock at this point, but I've considered the pertronix unit.

You're biggest issue is the dual carbs - you'll lose the vacuum advance you need with the stock dizzy, so whatever you choose needs to have mechanical advance capabilities. I've looked at MSD but that's big bux.

You'll also have to fab up a bracket off the front of the head to hold the distributer. Also the cam is different for the later engine. Use the later cam and gear and front cover. Use that 4" Merc crank too... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
