I would suggest buying a book that covers how to paint. They're not very expensive, and easy to refer back to as needed.

As far as primers, no matter what brand you use, you need to use a self-etching primer over bare metal. A primer surfacer for blocking, and then a primer sealer before paint. It is very important to keep everything clean, so you will also need to get some wax and grease remover or prep-sol. The local autobody supply store should be able to help you out.

There are many companies that make this stuff, but this is an area where you get what you pay for. There are the big boys like PPG and Dupont, however PPG makes OMNI. It's not as good as regular PPG, but it is cheaper.

"Jumping right in" will end up costing you hundreds of dollars in equipment and supplies. Not to burst your bubble, I'm all for do it your self stuff, but painting a car takes at least a little experience and a good bit of equipment. If you get the stuff to do it with I'd still recomend a few practice pieces (spare sheet metal, or car body parts, etc.). Good luck!
