For all the people who watched the TLC and are thinking of signing onto the HAMB...
We talk about Traditional Rods and Customs, We don't talk about your 5.0 mulletmobiles, your Hondas or your VWs.
...even if they are painted flat black and have red wheels.

I wonder how many hits ebay will have on items with rat rod in them?
A HERD of NEWBIES.
Remember, Ryan declined RIDES when they asked our little family to play in thier sandbox. He is tops in my book. But, I do think they did a good job covering trad cars and debunking the term RATRAD. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My pops just gave me a 1931 "deuce" roadster sedan and it was painted red glossy.
This show inspired me to paint it flat... just like my woman's chest....

Anyway, this boared is really wicked kool and I need to do an into.

I have been into rodz since I was knee high to a Junebug.
I have built a bunch of rod models and one day I will build a rod in 100th scale instead of 0:32 scale.
I like the east coast frame look with the west coast body style.
I like Empi 5 spoke rims on 31 "Deuce" roadster sedan p/u's.

I liked it! Showed the cars we like with no Monster Garage bullshit, no Amercam Chopper battles, and no Boyd. When the show opened at Viva Las Vegas I was concerned the whole thing might be portayed as a bunch of circus freaks. They covered the build up pretty well, a bit short but its only an hour show. I'm going to try to catch it again and tape it. I was surprised.

I dont think they know much about period correct as none of those guys where around in the 50's and if they where they would know that only the finished cars where at the shows. Look in the old car magazines and in some old books. Also they didn't have mig welders back then nor did anyone who was smart ever torch an effin steering box that is if you wanted it to last. Also they used lead .. so if those guys wanted to be real and really period correct use the right stuff and they didn't have square stock then either from what im told. They talk all this trash about nice cars where someone may have actually done alot of hard work to there car and want it to be safe and reliable.. not crazy and a death trap. I'm all for the traditional look but if your gonna say your period correct and talk all sorts of trash about other people i just dont think thats something the hobby should be representing myself. ... just my 2 cents.

Do you use an old gas welder fer your projects? Do you heat the morning meal on a cast-iron stove? I bet these guys ate modern food during the taping! To me "period correct" don't mean show-n-shine. My father's rod (from tha 50's) never had a coat of paint on it, are you callin that a poseur attempt at rodding?
See here- reliable is within the realm of the modern car. I can assure you that NO 50 year old engine is gonna be reliable- and safe?!? A "traditional" hot rod had little more safety of a breadbox, due to the "go fast" idea behind the rod. These guys busted their asses fer this car, and you piss on that.
Oh, and I didn't hear much trash talkin- stranger.

That and him going out on a limb and postulating that everything sprouted from his own hotrodding..
(the attitude I mentioned earlier today that people seemingly tend to focus on their own experience and act as if the history of their hobby started the day they got into it)
Pretty cool show though, the voiceover stuff blows, as it does on ALL of the Discovery, TLC shows...
Their engine magically rebuilt/replaced itself, and their traditional nickel and dime project probably cost more than my daily driver by the time they were done http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

As others said, none of the dumb drama that makes me run for the hills at the mention of the "other" shows. And I really appreciated the palpable effort to kill the term "rat rod".
Weesner's got real talent and those Choppers screw together some of my favorite cars.
I am busting my hump trying to get my garage together to move all my parts to ONE place so that I can actually build something. That show was great inspiration. It would also be a good primer (no pun intended) for some friends who don't quite understand yet.

I think they screwed us all though. Now the goldchainers are gonna want something for the "junk" engines they have yanked from their street rod projects to make room for that zls6 quick burn tuned port crate 350.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Most Goldchainers don't want to hassle with selling the old parts, That's too common, like having a Sunday yardsale. It's the guys building the cars that are going to jack us on the price of good used parts.
After all they're the ones removing them at the Goldchainers command. So get in good with your local billet rod builder.
It was the best Rides to date with out a doubt. KK

also, like was said here before, i too fear the price of "vintage" parts is about to go off the charts. i can still remember the days of $500 panheads before harleys became fashion statements. defineately a great show though. i may have to take my chainsaw out in the backyard and cut that "T" frame loose from the underbrush.

I know Verne, Sandy and Keith and they are more than the real deal when it comes to cars and even nicer guys. I'm stoked that they were the ones chosen to do the show. They did a perfect job of relating at least MY personal feelings about the whole Rat Rod vs. Hot Rod thing.
As for Williams.......WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?! I have hung out with him a couple times and he is definitely a talker but to claim it all came from him? Dude, COME ON! I have built this type of car for 18 years and didn't see his roadster until about 10 years ago. His car had little influence on me nor anyone I know. Neither did the article about the Choppers that they mentioned. We were already doing the same thing too. Actually my influence for driving shit around unfinished started when I was like 10 years old. I grew up in SoCal and used to see the lowrider guys in Santa Ana driving their primered Monte Carlos around with brand new wires. For some reason I was drawn to that stuff even then. Movements don't come from one person. They come from many like-minded people evolving at the same time. Now to claim that Ed Roth has had an influence on all of us.....HELL YES. Granted, Robert Williams did all of my favorite Ed Roth art, so I love Mr. Williams as an artist. I hope they took his comment out of context and that he doesn't really believe what he said.
Anyway, as much as I don't like to see things I like to do on TV, that fucking show made me so depressed that I wasn't out in the garage working on MY shit.
Nice job TLC and nice job Choppers (as usual)!

I really liked the show and how they put the term rat rod to bed. They maybe weren't as period correct as they think they are or as true to the roots. He did have to use several colors of yellow paint to make the wheels look aged and I really don't think the frame would have been found under a 50's car but that is all just nitpickin.
I really doubt the show has the impact on civicliztion and humainty that some of you fatalists want to give it credit for. I doubt if the gold chainers even watched let alone give a shit about the worth of old parts. Can't you just enjoy the fact that something we like and live was well represented without all the hand wringing over what kind of negative impact it might have? Did you watch Big that came on after it? Now is everyone going to run out and build a huge bike because Billy Lane helped build one? Dam there goes the huge big hobby, now it will just go to hell in a handbag when all the wannabes and posers take over.

I thought it was a great show. loved the scenes from Viva Las Vegas....maybe i'll get to go someday. I thought the deal about the real magilla versus the shiny fiberglass rod was very well put. The only problem I see started way back when Hot Rod magazine started their "Dare to Be Different" crap and continued with this show. Everytime somebody finds a way to build a car using other people's throw aways, somebody else wants to show the whole world and let the so called secret out of the bag driving the prices up even further for anything Rat Rod, Vintage or what ever tag they want to put on it.
I'm surprised someone hasn't bought this car already!

Hmmm, where to start?
3 newbies? I guess I missed one, I counted 2, but far less than I expected...and how do they find our secret hideout anayway?
Robert Williams is 83? Damn, I hope I look that good at 83. A great artist yes, the Father of hot rodding?, I think not.
Perhaps he meant that the Choppers started building cars modeled after his.
I would have liked to see more coverage of VLV but I realize they only have an hour. I applaud the Choppers for their work-together attitude. I know that there are other clubs on here that do that also. That to me is the way a car club should be, helping each other get and keep their cars on the road. There must be a lot of pride in seeing a car come toghter collectively. It truely becomes a club car.
And not to get too sappy but that picture of him at 5 standing next to the body was way cool. And I really liked the fact that the whole family was there for the unveiling of the car. Dad, Mom AND step-dad, son and grandfather. Nice personal touch.
Overall, a great show.
robert williams had more of an infleuence on my liking GUNS & ROSES back in the day than on my car choices!

Saw the last portion of the show, yes they did pick the right car club to feature. Though it seems to me the Choppers have been a bit quite and keeping to themselves in the past years. I guess thats what happens when you actually getting stuff done.
That was a cool rod that was built, but if you notice in that end shot where the coupe is driving down the street the body looks abit cockeyed on the frame, and not because of the rake. Just my opinion.
I bet there is a lot of footage that gets cut and we didn't see half of it. A lot of quote get used out of context and such. Ride episode will endup on DVD for 10 bucks each, I've seen biker buildoff and motorcycle mania DVDs there.
It seems the "Rides" crew got a copy of the MFS DVD and ran with it.
If you guy think they put the term RATROD to bed, your wrong. Its going to be more popular than ever.
I believe Jay Leno was paid some bucks for the apprearance, it's not because "he's cool like that", I know how PR works.
Is Rides doing more "Ratrod" coverage? Their going to be at the HHR this weekend.

as for crowds around it i wouldn't be surprized, even without the celebs and the camera's.
3 years ago at the good guys here in washington somebody from california brought an original hotrod from if i remember right 47, that had been in a barn since,
looked very rough, used alot of crappy arc, and gas welds everywhere. used iron bed frame tubes for the headers etc...
it sat in the middle of the show, and had crowds around it, no media and no celebs.... but a lot of pissed off goldchainers http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm heading out right now to get my copy of the new book "Robert Williams Re-invents the Traditional American Hotrod", I'm gonna see if it's next to the latest issue of Bo Huff Quarterly.....I mean Ol Skool Rods! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I saw the show and i liked it a lot. The VLV footage was really cool. they could've left out Bo Huff, OSR's version of GOD. Now I must comment on other people's comments. I figured that there would be some whiners here. there are some people on this Earth that you just can't please. you've been asking for a show like this for awhile now and once you get it, there's complaints about everything.
And for the people that think that traditional cars are going to show up everywhere, you all just need to chill out. do you actually think that the whole nation on 15-20 year old males watch TLC? also, the people that think the HAMB is going to be flooded with newbies, ummmm...so what? does it matter? Everyone just needs to relax work on their cars instead of worrying about the state of hot rodding. if you'd spend the amount of time working on your car as you did whine, your car would be done by now.
of course that's just my opinion; i could be wrong.

The only part I didn't like was the Robert Williams part, but I absolutely loved the rest. The narrator made a few mistakes, but for my money, it was very tasteful and very entertaining, a very informative show for the people the don't "get it," and very fun to watch as someone who does.
And at the risk of being unpopular, I liked it better than MFS.

Is this insulting? It is directly from the TLC site that describes last nights show.
"For them, it's grunge and "cool" that comes with attitude. And controversies — some have honed the Rat Rods look into sleek, shiny cars; customs that win trophies and are still Rat Rods.
A few Rat Rod purists have problems with this concept, insisting that true Rat Rods must live up to the name of "Rat Rod"; this debate is huge in the U.K., where armies of Rat Rodders slick back their hair and live a genuine Rat Rod lifestyle. The episode will also include cartoon legend Keith Weesner, an Art Center and Warner Brothers artist who specializes in drawing Rat Rods. In short: This episode will have stuff that even car builders haven't seen before."

I believe that in the UK, they embrace the phrase rat rod. Its not an insult to them over there.
that wasn't insulting for me. maybe it's just that they're mis-informed about the whole kustom "scene". nothing wrong with that, i mean TV gets a lot of shit wrong so why get pissed off that they said "rat rod" a few times? is it that big of a deal to worry about? we don't live in the UK so we can't really comment on what goes on over there on that aspect.
i already know that the vast majority of members of the HAMB along with the Choppers car club don't like to term "rat rod" but maybe it will become just like the word "fuck". remember when that was offensive but nowadays it's used so often that it doesn't mean anything anymore. there are far worse things to worry about then TLC getting a few things mixed up on last night's show.

Funny thing about Robt. Williams taking credit for the primered look, true or not, he also lays claim to the phrase "customs are for getting chicks and hot rods are for getting away from them".

Whoever it is, they aren't half as proud of him as they were of Priestly. Nothing on the website saying who it was, at least I couldn't find anything.

Does anybody know if Lance from the Choppers used to play drums for Dave & Deke?

Yeah, that is the same Lance Soliday. What a kick ass band that was. Been listening to it since I saw the show. "I just wanna ride in baby's Hot Rod". Classic.
Way cool that Lance drove his coupe out to the Roundup this year. Hotwheel built his Hemi Coupe from pictures of Lance's car. He was thrilled to see it in person.
