View Full Version : Dragfest or BUST Toymaker's HA/GR Build Thread

Sounds crazy but I gonna try to have my HA/GR built by Dragfest on May 2&3. It won't be a true HA/GR because the engine I have is a '68 Ford 6cyl with an automatic but it will be built in the spirit of the BUG in the sense that's all I have. I plan to put a manual trans in it as one comes my way. So far I have gathered the engine, trans, 4:11 8" Ford rear end complete, and a'48 ford PU straight axle and steering box. I also have a Jegster chassis kit with plenty of tubing I can replace later. Yesterday I trimmed the 'fat' off the PU front end and I pulled the engine today. I may fade and not complete by May2 but I'll take it any way. I appreciate all the support you guys offer on this site...............here we go!!!!!

Man,your taking on a big chore to get a running car that quick.
With a lot of help you might make it. Our first car took about 3 months with 3 to 4 guys working on it all the time.
Good Luck.

What engine is that? Is it the Ford 170? I'm pretty sure some of the Aussies are running that motor legally. Most of the slant sixes are using post '62 blocks. Theory is that the block didn't change, so the whole engine family is legal. Just build it.

I'm not up on Ford but if that block & head are essentially the same as their '62 or earlier parents then you're well within the spirit.
Pre '62 slants are getting rarer but the blocks stayed the same in essence 'til the end and the heads weren't changed all that much 'til they left the drool tubes behind and went to peanut plugs. All the blocks and all the "tube" heads are considered good to run. Same concept applies to other makes.
Toymaker, if you're going to be there no matter what then we'll haul the Barn Job up whether we get a response to our inquiry to Randy or not.
See you there?

Sounds like a plan, I'll keep you posted. I just got thru cutting my springs (1/4 elliptic) and removing the E brake cables. I'm gonna run the engine as-is for now (it did run a year or so ago), it got some water in it but it freed up pretty easy and I hope the tranny is good. It really helps finding a complete ready to run front and rear end.
One of my favorites and the look I'm shootin for!

I want to know more about your frame. If it's a Jegs kit, I bet the tubing is pre-bent. I've often thought this would be a good way to go. Show us more.
To tell the truth, I think the best HA/GR frame would be one you could convert to a slingshot later. With the right placement of tubes, it could be pretty slick.

The chassis kit is for a Mustang, The cage is too wide, so I'm gonna rob the 1 5/8 tubing from the kit to construct the drivers compartment. The cage will probably be 1 3/4 since I have a bender and those materials also. The main rails will be 3x1 1/2" .120 or .095 wall, I could use some feedback on that. I have given some thought about the slingshot conversion but I have to stay on track to get this done.

The "00" Okie Outlaw car you posted is built too light in my opinion. You can see the frame flexing when it drives around the pits. They say it's cro-moly so that's not a problem. If you are using regular mild steel, flex will lead to work harding and breakage.

Rand' gonna use mild steel, 3 x 1 1/2 .120 wall, picked up the material 2day! Thank you for your input, does the 00 car have a rigid mounted front axle? I'm leaving for the March Meet tomorrow, so I'm physically in a holding pattern (my brain is still building like it's on 100% NITRO:D). Not much progress the last 2 days, got my lug pattern template made to redrill the '48 front hubs and made my 1/4 elliptics.

Well after 2 weeks away from home, a vacation that included a visit to Bubba's Hot Rod Shop and Trailer Park (Thanks for the tour Jim), it's time to get after it. This week I fabbed the front spring brackets, cut my frame tubing, found a 37 ford front end that I split the wishbones, cut down my spindles and got my Coker's to name a few things accomplished. I'm gonna try a "Dragster Build Night" this weekend and I'll post pictures of the progress. I'm in need of a short tailshaft ford 3 speed and the clutch bellhousing assy for a Ford 200 6 if anyone has one.

Far from done but it rolls! When I mounted my rear tires up I found a 2" difference in the rollout (one is 93" and the other is 91"), something to watch for. So far I've spent $70.00 on the frame, $230.00 on the rear tires and 35.00 on the front wheel seals:confused:. I never thought it would be so cool, fun all rolled in one to build something so basic. My friends and family (the Team Twirl'n crew) are the best!

without wanting to sound like an ass, have you considered moing the engine forward a bit to give yourself room to move a bit, as I know that when I did mine I found that now, looking back, I with I had mooved the engine forward a bit more as whilst I made my situation 'work', things would have been so much easier if I just had a bit more space to work with....for me that was another 4" (in your case I tend to think another 18"...).
Keep at it, and keep up the forward momentum.

Drewfus, I'll accept any ideas and reccomendations. Your right I've since decided that the short 3 speed is not necessary.....No leg room. I guess I thought I was building a slingshot:D Anyone with a 200 Ford six or parts in the cali area that wants to help or sell it reasonable please pm me. Rocky

Well after a long week I finally got the engine runnin'. It started Saturday @ Pick & Pull pulling an engine and trans I thought I could use but it turns out it wouldn't fit (Ford Changed the bellhousing in '80) between my frame rails. So I yanked the head off and put it on the old short block, rebuilt the carb and distributor, fabbed the engine and tranny mounts and fired it tonight. Now it's on to the Drivers compartment and cage. Recent purchases were the long block $102.00, carb Kit $20.00, Points and condensor $30.00 (don't ask), gasket set $32.00 and some odds and ends. Only 30 days left 'til DragFest!

Been working on the steering and got my steering shaft extension (almost) done for the F-1 box. I cut the 'drop arm' off the splined section and machined a hub out of it that press fits into 1 5/8 tubing. Then I cut a slot into the tube/hub combo, welded a tube that a 3/8 bolt will go thru that will pinch the hub after I slit it. The steering shaft is also notched for bolt clearence to help assure it don't fall off. I also have the drivers compartment bars all fitted, made my water pump block off plate, water fill tube with cap and most important got my carb scoop ($25.00) mounted:D.....................24 more DAYS!

Got the steering box mounted, steering shaft support made, and my roll cage bent up. The cage came out a little wide but it's as tight of a radius my homemade bender will do. Plus I ran out of 1 3/4 DOM and with money tight I really like the looks of it:D I still need to add the helmet bars and will install the other 2 bars (making it a 5 pt) after Dragfest so I can run ANRA's Open Wheel category. So much to do with only 22 days to go!

Well......The steering is laid out using 1" .120" wall tubing ($25.00/ 20')with inserts welded in I machined out of 1/2" 'Hi-nuts' using 1/2" Rod Ends($22.00 pr). As far as geometry I just gave myself plenty of options and will see what works best, the box needs an additional brace to stop it from deflecting. I still need to fit the remaining diagonal. leg and helmet bars before we tear it apart Saturday for final welding. I know the car will be considerably slower than my 11 second door slammer but I'm Damn excited about runnin' it! Sent my entry in and feel fairly confident we'll have the car ready by Race Day, it will be there regardless.

After a week of no progress we got after the HA/GR Saturday. After fitting the diagonal supports we took it apart and welded up the cage, front end and 'capped' the frame rails. fabbed the master cylinder and battery mounts and tacked in the fuel tank brackets. This project is an effort of many people, my great friends Bud and his son Jarred, Hippie, John, my son Lee and new 'Team Twirl'n Racing' Member Tom but above all without the full support of my wife I couldn't hammer on like I do. Anyway back to the build, last week I added to the purchases, $60.00 for more materials (10 ft each of 1 3/4, 1 1/4, & 1") and a $100.00 for 5 pt harness & rollbar padding. A few more pics, for ideas and recommendations..................12 more days, Rocky

Started wih a 20' piece of tube, cut off 19" for a x-member then cut it in half for the frame rails. With 12" 1/4 elliptic front suspension we ended up with a wheelbase of 117". Anyone have any input on my (hand) brake handle ratio with a 1" master cylinder?

Total _______(I added it in my head)____________$925.00
-I know there are a Number of Items missing but you'll find friends (I have some great friends) to help ya out. A recap of the missing items; I had the engine, trans, and sheet of aluminum, 20' DOM Tubing (actually leeberz's aluminum), U-joint, Motor Oil, wiring, switches, 'friend' supplied Ford 8" and mastercylinder, 'friend' supplied seat belts, front end, front & rear wheels, The battery and Master Disconnect switch supplied by Joe's Battery Service and Leisle Electric, 'friend' loaned fuel tank, 'friend' had a large selection of materals to choose from, 'friend' supplied the used HD front tires, and we built it.
-Don't forget to cosider the cost of your safety equip. (suit, gloves, helmet, etc.), luckily our shoe had all that and I built the car with a sealed floorboard to keep the suit cost down. I know this statement is over used but the time spent with family and friends, making new friends, and the interest in the car is PRICELESS!
-The engine is a stock 200 Ford and it ran only a 15.23 @ 88 mph best but the crowd loved it. I'm working on a pair of Strombergs (leebrz has a GRIP of em for dad to choose from, "I love my son"), had some wire wheels fall into my lap (thanks Thingy') and bought new tires for the front.
-The next event for TeAM TWIRL'N is a car show here in Fresno June 14th, entered to thank a couple of our sponsors, Truck it by Cerutti & Sons and eat Great Mexican Food @ Guadalajara Mexican Restuarant. After that we'll take it to the ANRA June race @ Bakersfield. Come by and say hi, Rocky

I tore the car down to add to the cage and paint, after tearin' the car apart and talking to Thingy' I think I'm gonna try to get the manual trans in before the ANRA Race July 21st. I need a 3 speed ford manual transmission, long tailshaft complete with clutch, flywheel, and bellhousing for a Ford 200 6, I believe mid 60's to late 70's. Anybody out here on the west coast have one. Thanx in advance, Rocky

Well I painted the frame, engine and firewall to spiff her up for a car show the 14th. I also started fitting 2 more bars to make the cage a 5pt and hopefully make NHRA happy. I also scored a 3 speed setup to make the car legal and help me keep pace with Old6':D, we'll see later in the year. I dunno but it seems like an awful lot of red:eek:, I hope it all comes together after the body is intalled...............Rocky

Hey Rocky,
Looking at your extra loop it occurs to me that you could move the bottom of it (where it sits on the upper rail) forward close to the front loop junction, then lean it back far enough to look good, do they have to be parallel? That'd give you a "fan" look to it all and be more old style looking while getting you to a five point. Just a thought ...........
I'll take a look at the rule book to see if that'd be acceptable (with an eye toward another possible design to consider for ours as well ;) ).

I am looking for a 4 cyl. S-10 with a 5 speed to pull my Hamber around with. I know it isn't big enough but it will get a lot better mileage. Dick, Royal' had a GREAT time and did Fantastic for his 1st run EVER at a Drag Strip. I love the action of having to shift a real trans, jurys out until the Finals in 2 wks on any performance gain, probably gave out (or lost) about 50 cards and the ANRA Booth was right in the middle of the Midway. Butch said he talk to Russ that's why I thru in the "Trash Talk", if we had race cams, tires, pistons, carbs.....ANYTHING race maybe we could drum up some promotion propaganda:D:D:D

His first run ever was a 16?
Russ, I don't think you get to be noisy just yet. After all, it did take you four runs to squeeze out that 15. :D 'Course that's mostly my fault for not getting those SUs right yet. :o
Methinks Mr. 'Shifter may do it second time around.
Rocky, you're going to have the carbs on for the final, yes?
Also, you're right about the water & street treads, they don't mix at all. The last run I made last time out I did a wet burnout just for fun but it knocked around half a sec off the run as the tires turned rather than biting for most of first. Must've brought some of the water along for the ride. You can just hear it in that video too.
Good on you for the cards too, I'll try to do something like that as well for the final. If you have a scanner would you send me a picture of your card? I may try something similar.
ps. You get any pictures of you in the car? :D

If you were to build another, what width would you shoot for between the frame rails? And just to toss this in there, I'm personally leaning toward 24" between. Or a maximum of 28" at the back and tapering to about 16 at the front.

The hand brake allows on foot on the gas and one foot on the clutch when staged so you don't need to worry about rolling out of the lights.
There seems to be those who prefer a "pull" lever and those who prefer "push". Take your pick on that aspect or research the reasons and choose on that research.
I like the pull as I feel that the "G-force power assist" could lead to an inadvertent lock up in the shutoff area. Some prefer that assist, or just like to push rather than pull. I've looked an many of the best cars out there and seen both configurations, so it must just be a driver's preference thing.

Hi Vector, I left the left emergency brake cable on the rear, I have the clutch on the left, brake on the right and to the right of that is my throttle. With the brake cable on a lever on the left side for staging. It is set up just like that blue chevy pickup. The reason for this is in a bad problem, I can't see me turning loose of the steering wheel to grab a hand brake. I have too many years driving this way to change now, I want it to all be natural in a bind. I use a ratchet style of posi. in the rear end, it also should be safer if I get sideways it should come out of that easier. In an earlier thread you probaly saw where Rand Man said that he wants a foot brake. And that pickup would look great pulling a HA/GR in the same color. After all a toy should be bright. Joe

We call 'em a staging brake. If you don't get handy at staging while pre-loading the clutch, you scatter driveline, usually axles (with the stuff we're racing). So you have to pull the e-brake and inch into the lights with it.
I'll be pretty comfortable with whatever it is we come up with. It should feel about the same. Other than being about 1/2 as fast as the manual tranny stuff I'm racing now... ...lol...

Well OK we Lee and I got after it this weekend. We cut the holes in the intake and positioned the carb mounting, I made some small supports since the Strombergs sit so high. I'm still undecided about how to weld the adapters to the cast iron head, I'm not taking it off. There are some low temp brazing/soldering products I might try:confused: I can't wait to get these carbs figured out and see how they wake up the old 144 CI Ford:D

Knew some sports car racers back in the '70s that put small formula cars together using "All State 11" torch rod, (I think that was the name, the old brain slips sometimes). I believe it was a silver bronze alloy. Low temp and strong as hell. They crashed one and the tube tore (stretched and bent first), but the joint survived. The stuff was supposed to have been developed in WWII for aircraft structures.

OK Tom this one's for you :D I finished drilling the axle and "ventilating" one wish bone. I still have some finish grinding to do on the wishbone which I'll let Lee do. Besides the axle and wishbone mods I also prepped my spindles and picked up the wheel brgs for my 16" Harley (I think) motorcycle wheels. The wheels have been modified to accept Timken brgs and are going to really lighten up the front end, Thanks Thingy'. I did some weight comparisons and came up with a 40 lb:eek: wieght savings. The axle shaved 1 lb:cool:, the wish bones 2 lb ea, but getting the F-1 spindles, hubs and steel wheels off really made a difference. Can you guys remind me what the wieght savings will equate too in HP? And one more question, The spindles I have are the style that has the thrust bearing in top. What do you guys think about not using it? I know I had an old JR Fuel chassis that I believe was only shimmed and didn't use the thrust bearing. I posted a photo with and without. I' fired up about DragFest and can't wait to get together with you guys again. Rocky

Damn, she's starting to look like a "SoCal car".
We also started with the mechanical brake spindles and shortened the kingpins, leaving only the lower spindle pivot and a washer to handle the load. It's working out just fine, and our front end has to suffer carying me ...........
Just don't remove any more connecting material from the lower pivot than you absolutely have to.
ps. I think the spoke tape needs to go all the way 'round the wheel to break the beams ......
:p

Cool progress Rocky. That axle looks great, you have six more holes in yours than I have in mine and the Harley wheels really set it off.
Like Dick said, we are going to have to make you an honorary SoCal guy.
Patti said to tell you it looks great too.
Make sure you use high quality cards...they have a better sound. You can get them from the local Casino.:D

Do you put a shim in there or grind another locating groove in the kingpin and shorten it (so it doesn't stick out too far)?
Both?

I have some thick valve spring shims that we will put between the axle and lower side of spindle, then use the thin OE King Pin Shims between the top of the axle and the upper side to acheive a proper clearence. All I needed was a second opinion, it was too late last night to call anyone:D Thanks again for the support guys! Rocky

Well I just got back from the March Meet and although we didn't get to run the HA/GR we had great interest. ANRA and 1320 The Magazine allowed us to display the car on the midway and we had fun talking the car up today. On the way back to the trailer we ran it over the scales and found the car weighs 1235 LBS without driver. Lee snapped some photos to bring the thread up to date, showing the completed front end with our 16" Harley wheels.

Thanks for bringing your HA/GR to the March Meet. I eyeballed it and took pictures for later reference for my build.

Rocky, Your car is very photogenic. Looks great in the field. Do you know what you would have to do to the car to run it at the March Meet?

Thanks guys for the compliments. Steve Gibbs said we could run the car in exhibition if time allowed, unfortunately there was not enough time. He did say something about bringing it to the California Hot rod Reunion, which we did last year without a hitch. I think if I would of made arrangements before the event we could of made a pass. My hat's off to you. It is true dedication to spend the whole weekend to promote these cars and not get to run.
Good on ya Rocky, how'd you do with the Comet?
By the way Rocky, if they want more than one car in order to do a HA/GR demo run at a show & tell let me know, we'd enjoy doing it.
We're not offended if they don't want a middie just yet though. Most folks know little to nothing about the middie builds of the early fifties (some've even thought the Barn Job a sham, and made the mistake of telling me :D ) so the Bug stylers are better promotion for the class.
ps. Now I just gotta do a couple "Rockyshot" low angles of ours. :D
